885.0. "Insufficient Priv/Prot. Violation" by IND::VIGLIOTTI (Ann Vigliotti Waugh @NYO) Tue Jun 06 1989 10:05

Somehow, one of my customers has messed up her VAXstation 3100 ...

It used to work okay, but now, when she logs into her none privileged
account she's getting the following message in a dialog box when the
system tries to create a File View:

"There was an error opening your profile file.
    		 Insufficient privilege or protection violation."

When I try to create a DECterm I get this message:

    		"Error creating DECterm
    		 no logical name match"

I've looked at directory protections and ownerships for something amiss,
but haven't found anything. I know this must be simple to fix, but I
don't know what to look for.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Ann

p.s. When the user account has SYSPRV, everything works fine.

The files that FileView will try and open are as follows:

file pointed to by VUE$SYSTEM_PROFILE logical (if defined) or
    	VUE$LIBRARY:VUE$SYSTEM_PROFILE.VUE$DAT

files pointed to by VUE$PUBLIC_PROFILE logical (if defined) or
    	VUE$LIBRARY:*.VUE$DAT

file pointed to by VUE$PROFILE logical (if defined) or
    	DECW$USER_DEFAULTS:VUE$PROFILE.VUE$DAT

Make sure all those files are readable by your user. Did your user
    change their UIC?

The logical DECterm is probably looking for is in the form
DECW$DECTERM_MAILBOX_nodename::0.0 and should be in the system table.
This is the mailbox by which DECterms communicate with the DECterm
controller. Does this logical exist? Does it have the correct
    nodename?
