Sounds like a bug to me. I haven't been able to reproduce it in the latest
post-V1 baselevel.

| Shift-clicking, control-clicking, alt-clicking, and help-clicking are
all part of the XUI style.
For instance, Shift-MB1 is defined as extend selection. In a list box,
you can use Shift-MB1 to add something to the current selection. Try
this in VUE sometime, in the filename area. In text widgets (and in
DECterm), if you already have something selected, Shift-MB1 extends the
current selection region to include everything between the current
boundry of the selection region, and the point that the mouse was
pointing at when the button was clicked.
Help-clicking is used for context sensitive help. Try holding down the
HELP key sometime, while clicking MB1 on something, say, in DECwindows
NOTES, and see what happens...

875.6 | The wonders of {up|down}clicking | GR8FUL::HERBERT | Class B Computing Device | Tue Jun 13 1989 18:59 | 26 |
| Hey, once I accepted the conceptual validity of Shift-Tab,
Shift-Delete, and Shift-Return, anything seemed possible...
At least the only defined use for clicking multiple buttons at the
same time is to cancel an operation. Could you imagine: hold down MB1,
and double-click MB3.
There is also <modifier>-upclicking and <modifier>-downclicking for
accessing those really obscure options. An example of this is VUE (if I
recall correctly). In VUE, when you select an option, it creates a
dialog box for specifying options. One of these options is "hide this
dialog", which causes VUE to not display the box anymore, and use the
user's defaults. If you want to get that box back, you point to the
option in the menu, hold down the shift key, and then release MB1. I
think I have this right - I'm not at my workstation to check it out.
I reported a bug in the toolkit dealing with shift-upclicking (how I
ran into this, I don't know). You can see it for yourself with
VAX Notes. Point at one of the pushbuttons at the bottom of the read
window. Press down MB1. Press the shift key. Release MB1. Release shift
key. If the bug hasn't been fixed, no action will be taken, but the
pushbutton will remain illuminated. Actually using the pushbutton
clears that state.

Has anybody written a Doctoral thesis yet on it? And can *anybody*
remember all or even a substantial number of these "shortcuts"?
And I better be damned careful when I touch the mouse to keep my
fingers off the KB...

anyone that has been around me typing knows that I have more than the
usual dexterity. Now, if only I could learn to stop typing
compose-space and shift-delete on my VT240. :-)

Are you sure, Jeff? It works for me. I did fix some keyboard problems,
though, so this may be broken in DECterm V1.0.

| With packing my office and moving to the mill and all that, I should just
stay out of NOTES for a few days.
1 - I apologize for spreading mis-information. TODAY the SHIFT-DELETE sequence
seems to do the right thing in both VT240 and DECTerm, all according to
DEC STD 70. It sends DELETE.
2 - CTRL-DELETE sends ^X, just like DEC STD 70 says.
I could have sworn SHIFT-DELETE sent ^_ yesterday.
I've deleted the notes where I spread mis-information.
