Minor correction: Zach is refering to the Adobe Font Metric files
(AFM, not AMF).

Actually it was a type. It was supposed to say something like
from the .DECW$FONT files.
We have all these terminal fonts but they are exactly that.
There seems to be no way to print them out because we don't
have the associated font metrics.
We obviouly have all the glyphs in the .DECW$FONT files, and
there has to be .BDF files for those fonts. The question is
can we create the font metrics if we have the glyphs ?

865.5 | Fonts not for general use | DDIF::BRAMHALL | Mark Bramhall | Mon Jun 05 1989 13:17 | 8 |
| The VMS release notes (I haven't checked the Ultrix release notes)
specifically state that the fonts used by the terminal emulator are
*NOT* to be used by anything else! So, I am not surprised that there
are no .AFM and/or .PS files...
If you want to be able to use these fonts, it looks like you will have
to talk to whoever made the "do not use" decision.

Knowing Zach's reason for asking is that the UIS => DDIF converter also
must translate fonts to the closest DECwindows equivalent. Well, the
DECwindows terminal fonts originated as CFFF fonts and are available
on VWS - so they are direct replacements. Now, the Courier fonts can
be used as a reasonable replacement -- EXCEPT that it appears that
there is no DECtech (Technical Character Set) available except as
terminal fonts... So UIS files that might have the technical
character set cannot be output!
Now, if there is some clever way around this (like the tech set is
within the symbols font or some such thing)... Otherwise it's another
apparent hole in actually being able to use a converted UIS file with
anything that reads DDIF (like using color images :-( or writing
modes).

| Hi, Fred & Zach, it's me again...
I knew Zach's reason for asking -- but, the official party line (not my
making!) had to be stated.
I'll admit the lack of writing modes in DDIF (anyone interested can
read a long diatribe on this in the DDIF::DDIF conference), but that
was on purpose. But wait, play fair. We do color images!

Huh? *You* might, but my printer told me to take a flying leap.
