842.0. "installation problem" by 36241::MULLIGAN () Wed May 24 1989 17:43

A customer bought a PVAX, he installed VMS 5.1-B, DECwindows
and VWS from an SDC CD. He said that the installation appeared
to go smoothly except for an error message near the end stating
that GCBDRIVER was not found.

When he boots DECwindows he gets an error message indicating that
GCBDRIVER.EXE is not found. When he boots VWS he gets an error
message indicating that VEDRIVER.EXE is not found. In both case
the system is up and running with no windowing software.

I had him look in SYS$LOADABLE_IMAGES and both GCBDRIVER.EXE and
VEDRIVER.EXE are missing.

Does anyone have any idea what happened here?

About the only thing I can think of is that the kit was bad or
the installation failed.

Any help is appreciated,
Pat

Kind of an interesting coincidence that the drivers are missing from both kits!
Makes me suspicious about thinking that it is problem with the kit.

Also, I think GCBDRIVER is for a monochrome VAXstar. I would think that a
PVAX would be GAnDRIVER. I don't remember my Vs anymore.

GCBDRIVER is the mono driver for both PVAX and VAXstar. (GABDRIVER is the
color one for both).

Sounds like both the DECwindows and VWS kits did not install properly. Have
him install the DECW051 and VWS04x (0A or 1) sdavesets again.
