| VMSKIT is now a master distribution point only to "subdistributers". You
need to get stuff only from the subdistributers. Unfortunately, I don't have
a list of the sub-sites.

| ANNOUNCING NEW ACCESS RULES FOR VMSKIT:: |
+------------------------------------------+
DIGITAL INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
TO: VMSINTEREST DATE: 24-March-1989
DEPT: VMS Development
SUBJECT: Availability and Access to VMSKIT::
VMSKIT and BULOVA have traditionally been the machines from
which VMS distributes information to the world. Several prob-
lems have developed using the current usage rules, so a new
process is being instituted for how VMS distributes kits
and documents. This document will outline the old process
and the new process.
The old process was very simple. VMS Development would sim-
ply copy a kit or some documentation to a disk on VMSKIT
and then the world had access to it. This changed a bit in
the recent past with kit distribution sites. We found that
when we put a kit on VMSKIT or BULOVA that many people could
not get to it because the machine was so overloaded.
Distributed kit distribution gave kits to other sites and
people were requested to get kits from these other sites.
This is a wonderful idea, but only those who read the notes
conferences knew that they should pull the kits from other
sites and not VMSKIT. We found that the machines were still
overloaded and causing network traffic problems facility
wide and beyond.
Other problems with the old process were that many people
placed things on VMSKIT not realizing that world access means
exactly that. Specific fixes for specific people were be-
ing copied by the world at large and even given to customers.
In light of the fact that we were causing facility wide net-
work problems, and worse, spreading copies of inappropri-
ate and potentially incorrect data, a new plan for use of
VMSKIT is being instituted effective 1-April-1989.
The new plan restricts access to VMSKIT only to those sites
that serve as sites for kit distribution. (The list of re-
mote distribution sites is attached). This means that gen-
eral access to VMSKIT will no longer be available. Only those
sites acting as distribution points will be allowed access
to VMSKIT. This solves the problem of network traffic for
the facility. Further, we believe that use of these dis-
tribution sites will increase access for all internal users.
Any installation desiring to become a kit distribution site
or drop out as a distribution site should contact Dave Maryan-
ski (STAR::MARYANSKI).
Digital Confidential 1
Page 3
The files on VMSKIT will provide new versions of software
only. When a kit goes to field test, it will be put on VM-
SKIT. As soon as a new kit is available, the old kit will
be removed. When the kit is available from the SDC, it will
remain on VMSKIT for a short period of time. After this time,
access by remote sites will be closed.
We especially wish to thank the distribution sites for their
efforts and assistance in providing kits to the network.

internal releases, contact Dave STAR::Maryanski.
If you have problems with installing the system, please report them in

| Oops, I got the filespecs wrong in .8. The correct information for the ORPHAN
redistribution point is:
ORPHAN::KITS:[DECWINDOWS.V2_IFT1] (kits)
ORPHAN::KITS:[DECWINDOWS.DOCUMENTATION.V2_IFT1.LN03] (LN03 docs)
ORPHAN::KITS:[DECWINDOWS.DOCUMENTATION.V2_IFT1.POST] (PostScript docs)
ORPHAN::KITS:[DECWINDOWS.DOCUMENTATION.V2_IFT1.ONLINE] (Bookreader docs)

| re 821.3: BULOVA::VMS-KIT-DISTRIBUTION was originally a restricted
conference for kit distribution sites for VMS V5.0 during FT2 time.
Since the release of V5.0 over a year ago, the conference lay dormant
for a year. It was recently reopened for use by the current
distribution sites, who are members of the conference, but the
conference is no longer restricted to members.
The list of distribution sites is updated from time to time in topic 3
of COMCAD::EASYNET_KITS, an announced conference.
