783.1 | DECterm is a a VW layered on a Porsche | KOBAL::VANNOY | Jake VanNoy | Tue May 16 1989 09:46 | 3 |
| If you plan to win, don't use our terminal emulator. Compare raw X
text performance at the Xlib level.

Ouch, good one, Jake. We just haven't had the time to improve performance
*and* reliability *and* functionality, and DECterm deserves (and gets) flames
in all three departments, but hopefully things will improve over time.

Hell, sell 'em UIS, my figures show >20,000 characters-per-second
on a monochrome VS3100 running VWS V4.0 and VMS V5.0.
The VMS performance group should have all the DECterm numbers (since
I got them from them to make comparison charts - don't ask me for them),
try someone like John Buford (think that's the name...).

783.4 | Ask why? | 34858::SOCHA | Out in the Field | Tue May 16 1989 13:19 | 8 |
| You may also want to ask about DECterm performance in the Workstation
Conference at SHPLOG::WS_COMPETITIVE_FORUM.
Does the customer really need great DECterm performance, or is HP
just trying to distract them?

783.5 | Beat HP on this one. | 32881::WATSON | | Wed May 17 1989 12:52 | 15 |
| I competed with HP on a similar issue and won. I used a version
of Steve Klein's Vlist widget to show how fast we could scroll text
(write text) to a screen.
We didn't measure cps, just seeing Vlist move as fast as it does
and consume as little system resources as it does was enough to
win.
See note 50 (?) in DW_EXAMPLES.
Send me mail if you need more info.

783.6 | DECterm & Reverse LAT? w/ TransLAN | GLDOA::MORRISON | Dave | Fri Jun 02 1989 23:44 | 11 |
| I have a related HP need - this one to connect to an HP3000 MPE
from a VS 3100 DECterm window connecting to a reverse LAT session
and also to open a 327x session through a window also. Both of these
will need to run accross TransLAN to the remote 370 and HP systems.
Is this feasable much less practical? What the customer really wants
is for the HP window to show a full screen. If this is not possible
with reverse LAT perhaps ther is a HP terminal emulator out there
which can run layered on VMS. ANY help in this will be most
appreciated. My normal area of involvement is in networks and not
in workstations so pardon any ignorance. Thanks.
