| This has been mentioned in this conference, but here goes again.
Send VAXMail to Eric (?) Osman (HANNAH::OSMAN) for access to a conference
on the subject. I cannot say what has or is being done, but your
requirements have been voiced and the issue is being studied.
Just as a hint you might try dir/conf hannah::

yes, we're doing the TEK 4125 emulation project under DECwindows.
BL1 is for internal-use only, and is available.
We've got a members-only conference (management request) that explains
all.
Send me mail if you'd like to be on it. I need
o Your node::username that you'll be accessing from
o Your real name
Thanks.

| Two issues:
1) DECwindows should also provide a 4014 emulator, either standalone or
ala the VT240.
2) What is the reasoning behind offering a layered 4125 product that is
a variant of the same code bundled with UIS?
) Why does something originally written for VMS *X11* and Ultrix *X11*
need to be ported to DECwindows?
(and a bonus )
) Why don't we include "xterm" with the VMS kit? It has a 4010/14 in
addition to a near-VT100?

As project leader for DECwindows 4125 emulation project, let me take a dagger
to some of those questions:
o Why are we planning to sell the DECwindows emulator when the old
version was supplied as part of the UIS kit ?
Because we can make more money this way. The DECwindows version
will have lots of bug fixes, plus enhancements, plus plans
for future versions.
o Why bother to convert it to DECwindows when it already runs
as an X11 product ?
Because all DECwindows products have to follow DECwindow Clearinghouse
rules, including UIL etc.

Hmmm. So, you get a *working* 4125 (in X11) paid for by HPWS (Lynx)
and the UIS group. Spend six months *porting* it to follow the DW
Style Guide and then charge for it? At the same time, UIS pays for and
uses the *same* working X11/4125, completely rewrites the graphic backend
for UIS instead of X, and bundles it on the VWS kit (for *free*).
Since VWS has pledged ongoing support for at least the next 3 years and
*does* have every intention of enhancing the 4125 and fixing bugs as
they are reported, and uses the *same* front-end... I have no idea what
your value added is.
So, DECwindows users *don't* get a 4010/14 (unless they want to port
xterm) *and* they will *eventually* get the 4125 *but* they have to
*pay* for it?
Progress.
_Fred (*not* the UIS/TEK project leader, but awfully concerned about
UIS users who are migrating to DECwindows)

768.8 | I guess I don't really know why we're charging for TEK | 56733::OSMAN | see HANNAH::IGLOO$:[OSMAN]ERIC.VT240 | Tue May 16 1989 18:54 | 12 |

I guess I'm not qualified to really answer your questions about why
customers should pay for our DECwindows Tek 4125 emulator.
I've forwarded .7 to my managers and requested that they read this
conversation and respond (Ed Parsons, Richard Glantz, Peter Conklin are
the managers).
Thanks.

I'm just asking the same questions that will be asked by customers.
Since I'm someplace between VWS and DECwindows (Migration), I get
hit with the flak.
If *I* don't have a good answer, I'm stuck with a soft-shoe act or
telling the truth ("I don't know") - and neither makes me confortable.

768.10 | Can we get our hands on the X11 stuff in the field? | 35254::SCOTT | Greg Scott, Minneapolis SWS | Thu May 18 1989 15:39 | 17 |
| OK, lemme get this straight:
There's an X11 version of tektronix emulation. The VWS folks ported
this to their windowing. Eric is working on "porting" to DECwindows.
I assume this means making it conform to the DECwindows style guide.
Meanwhile, we have people screaming for tektronix emulation on the
DS3100 now. We probably also have people screaming for it in the VAX/VMS
world, but I don't care about them right now.
So, how do we get our hands on a copy of the X11 code? Does MIT have a
flavor, is it internal DEC only, or what? Suppose a customer was
willing to pay, or agreed to be a field test site, or something like
that? This is the USA, can we work something out?

| Yes, you have it straight.
I do not know if it is possible to get the "X11" flavor, it was written
by DEC for the VS8000 (and if I remember right, it was a Ultrix GPX
that was used by the engineer for development). Aside from the 4014
stuff in xterm, I do not believe that there is anything available
from MIT. My brief look at the code (in C) looks to be written for
both VMS and Ultrix.
Since the DECterm people intend to sell the emulator shortly, I doubt
very much that anyone will be willing to allow the X11 version to be
released to customers via any means (including ASSETS) and there isn't
any way that the sources will ever be released (unless we are
completely insane, it took Andy a lot of work to write). And since
I think the Lynx group has been (or is being) dissolved, the DECterm
group probably owns the source now (don't know), but in any case you
would need their blessing.
