| I'm not an authorative source, but I'm reasonably sure I know how things are.
I'm sure we'll find out soon if I'm wrong...
When you order software, you get documentation along with it. What
documentation you get depends on what the product group for that product
thought was right.
When you order ULTRIX-32 Version 3.0 for, say, an 8800, you get the ULTRIX-32
base system documentation.
When you order UWS Version 2.0 for, say, a MicroVAX 2000, you get the UWS
documentation, and the ULTRIX-32 base system documentation. You get both
because the UWS software kit *includes* the ULTRIX-32 base system software.
UWS runs on ULTRIX-32 Version 3.0; therefore, the assumption is that a
workstation running UWS also is running ULTRIX-32.
When workstation software for ULTRIX first came out, it was separate; you had
to order ULTRIX-32 separately, install ULTRIX-32 first, then install the
workstation software. This generated quite a few complaints.
The next release created a seamless distribution: on one tape, with one
installation process, you could install both ULTRIX-32 and UWS on a workstation.
One-stop shopping made life much easier in the field.
Unless things have changed a whole lot lately, this is still the way things are.
I don't have any idea what happens with VMS, but there are other answers to
that part of the question elsewhere in this conference and in
DECWINDOWS_DOCUMENTATION.
