738.0. "DECWindows/UIS questions..." by PELKEY::PELKEY (Life aint for the squeamish) Mon May 08 1989 17:27
Sorry if this is a redundant topic,,,,,,,
I've just built an LAVC, and for application purposes I've
built it under UIS windows, offering VAXSight as a presentation
graphics tool... and please, lets not go down the obvious path, the
requirements for the lab are vaxsight until DECPresentor is ready...
hence, UIS windows... I've got a Station running DECWindows and
it's GREAT ! This is a question of rrequirements for the 'lab'.
Anyway here's the topic for discussion, and again, I looked to see if
there was anyhting prior to this, but didn't find anyhting.
The LAVC has a boot node, and 2 VAXStation 2000s.
How viable is it to offer both windowing prodcuts ?
Technically it's doable,(have UIS and DECWindows) but is it possible
/feaseable/user-friendly to have one station running UIS and one
running DECWindows on the same LAVC at the same time ?

738.1 | sure why not? | CVG::THOMPSON | Protect the guilty, punish the innocent | Mon May 08 1989 18:03 | 8 |
| Assuming that the system disk has the room there is no reason
it shouldn't work fine. We've been running both on our cluster
for a while. The mix of vws to DECwindows workstations has gone
from mostly VWS and a few DECwindows to mostly DECwindows with
no one noticing a difference.

| DECwindows and VWS coexist just fine in the same LAVc. Our cluster has been
running this way since the beginning of DECwindows with no problems. Just
make sure that both DECwindows and VWS are installed on the boot node. For
each satellite workstation, decide which window system you wish to run and
set the WINDOW_SYSTEM sysgen parameter appropriately. Boot the workstation,
run AUTOGEN to get the other parameters set properly for that window system,
and you're in business. If you maintain two files of sysgen parameters,
you can even switch back and forth between window systems by renaming the
appropriate parameter file to VAXVMSSYS.PAR and rebooting.

It was always the intention of both the VWS and DWS groups that both
window systems would be supported on the same cluster, and even on
the same node (not at the same time however :-).
If this ever breaks: It's a bug.
