731.0. "What is a "user" in DW?" by EEMELI::TUURI (Pekka Tuuri DTN 879-5223) Fri May 05 1989 02:49
Hello!
I would like to know TECHNICALLY what a "user" is in DECwindows
environment in terms of VMS licensing. Yes, I have read topic 421.
Let me take an example.
There is a PC user who has a PC and PC-DECwindows for MSDOS running on
it. In the same network there are also two multiuser VAXen (VAX1 and
VAX2) which are DECwindows application engines.
The PC user starts his PC DECwindows and the locally running Session
Manager provides a form that can be used for starting applications. The
user starts the Window Manager, a DECterm session and the Clock, which
are clients in the VAX1. Then he starts two DECterm sessions and the File
View which are clients in the VAX2. And now the question, how many VMS
license slots does this PC user use in the VAX1 and in the VAX2?
Next, with the help of a DECterm session to VAX1, he starts a DECwindows
application using RUN/DETACH VMS command. Does this detached process
require one VMS license slot.
And finally he submits a batch job that starts yet another application.
Does this application, started in a batch job, require one VMS license
slot.
Regards, Pekka Tuuri
