672.0. "Print tray selection options confusing" by ITSMEE::MEE (Kathy) Tue Apr 25 1989 11:33

Hi,

I've got a little clarification question. We are in the middle of
translating some products and we are a little confused. In the print widget
options window, there is a pulldown menu for the "OUTPUT TRAY" choices. In this
menu, there are choices for TOP, UPPER and LOWER. I'm a bit confused as to
exactly what these mean. Does TOP mean the tray on the top of the printer, and
UPPER mean the 'top' tray on the side of the printer?? If this is the case, then
why are the input tray choices top, middle, and bottom ... since they are on the
side of the printer?? (Instead of upper, middle, and lower?) If this isn't the
case, then I think I'm more than a bit confused ... and could somebody please
explain to me the meanings...??

Thanks!
Kathy

As far as the visual presentation of these printing options is concerned,
the print widget is merely reflecting the expected (official) names of the
of the OUTPUT_TRAY parameter. As for how the individual printers map those
names onto trays, I cannot give you a definitive answer. My quick test on
the local LPS20 reveals the following mapping:

	| TOP
	|Tray UPPER
	+--------------
	| SIDE
	|Tray LOWER
	+--------------
	| |
	| Printer	|
	| |	(LARGE CAPACITY not accepted.)
FACEUP	| |
	| |
    Tray| |
 -------+ |
	| |

Perhaps a member of the printer groups will elaborate.

672.2How the trays got their names (adapted from "The 3 Little Piggies")PUEBLO::GABBEFri Apr 28 1989 16:0254
I am under the impression that you have not seen all of the printers in the
flesh. It makes alot more sense when you have seen these things.

The following account only applies for the PostScript symbionts and is an oral
recounting of what happened in several of the meetings at which tray names were
discussed.

The guiding principle in naming the trays was the agrument for
/parameter=output_tray=<tray name> (and input_tray too) would be obvious when
the user went to the printer to pick their output.

The input trays across the PrintServer family so far has been rather consistent.
The trays are all stacked up on the side of the printer. LCIT is a synonym for
BOTTOM. The only inconsistency is in some of the error messages which refer
to an "Upper" & "Lower" tray. This is terminology used by the print engine
manufacturer for the 2 removable, 250 sheet capacity, cassette trays. These
top 2 trays are TOP & BOTTOM for /parameter stuff.

Where the output trays go are dictated by the mechnical workings of the print
engine. It is something we have little control over and therefore, each printer
has its own set of names. However, we do have the following mapping scheme
that translate the tray names for one print engine to that of another's. I have
been asked to be abstract to limit the discussion of unannounced products and
futures. Any specific question I would prefer to answer in a private mail
message.

Engine 1: TOP: Has a tray on the top of the machine
SIDE: Has a tray on the left side of the machine
FACE_UP: Uses the SIDE tray, but output is stacked faceup.

Engine 2: UPPER: Has 2 trays on the top of the machine. This is the top
                  most one.
LOWER: This is the tray under the UPPER tray.
FACEUP: This is the tray on the left side of the machine. It must
be pulled down to use. Output is stacked faceup.
N.B. My suggestion for calling the upper & lower trays tippy top &
tippy bottom respectively, was not adopted.

Here is the conversion table:

User	Eng1	Eng2
Request
----------------------
FACE_UP	Face_up	Face_up
LOWER	Side	Lower
SIDE	Side	Lower
TOP	Top	Upper
UPPER	Top	Upper

The symbionts will generate a tray substitution message to let people know
which tray was actually used.
