661.0. "Is there a null display?" by EVETPU::REINIG (This too shall change) Mon Apr 24 1989 13:39

Is there such a thing as a null display? I'ld like run a decwindows
application on a machine that has decwindows but has no display
devices. I know I won't be able to get any input events.

I don't know of anything like a null display. What DECwindows routines
would you want to use without a display?

I would use it for testing. I could test whether or not I was using
the CLIPBOARD correctly, whether I was dealing with the GLOBAL
SELECTION correctly, etc. There are lots of things I could test
that don't depend upon the image on the display.

DEC/Test Manager currently has working a version of a monochrome Xserver that
does not require a display device. DTM's server, instead of using video
memory for output, allocates a chunk of regular memory and uses this to
produce screen images. This server may be run on any VAX with or without
a display device. This server might be used for your purposes, especially
if you want to run your tests in batch.
