    Well, I don't know about DECwindows supporting metacharacters, but
    Monty is one of the biggest metacharacters I know (see his last note),
    and *he* supports DECwindows, so the other way around is certainly
    true.

Compose is usually modifier to the ALT key modifier.  However using xmodmap
(under Ultrix) you can change Compose to be a META key modifier.

xmodmap "keycode 0xb1 = Meta_L"
