638.0. "Graphics package with DECWindows" by TLE::HUSSON (Dave Husson) Wed Apr 19 1989 15:00

Can anyone tell me if there will be a graphics widget, i.e. something like GObe
or SVN, that will be shipped as part of DECWindows?

The reason for asking is that it would be nice to not have to require that a
customer buy GKS or some other graphics package just to run another product.

Your question is not too clear.

Do you mean, "Will there be something like GObE that we can link into
programs that we ship to customers?" If so, the answer is yes, GObE.
There is no problem using GObE or SVN or NETED in an application that
we ship since those are linked as object libraries and therefore do not
need any shareable image installed.

Or, do you mean, "Will there be something like GObE that customers can
build into applications that they sell to run under DECwindows?" If this
is what you want, then the best bet is probably GKS. Their customers will
have to by the RTO kit for GKS.

Or, do you mean something else entirely?

Of course, I don't think that .1 means that GoBE will be *free*,
I understood that it might be packaged as a LP.

RE: .3

At least with v1, GoBE is free (sort of). With GoBE, layered products which
use it link it in. No extra cost shareable image is needed. If a layered
product uses GKS, the customer at least has to buy GKSRTO so that s/he can run.
In V1, the short coming of GoBE is that it is not available for customers to
build into their applications.

If at some point a GoBE software development package becomes an layered product,
then a decision will need to be made as to whether it will include a shareable
image and if so whether the shareable image will be shipped OOTB with DECwindows
or as an extra cost RTO kit.

638.5"Internal only" for nowRTL::GRASSSteve GrassThu Apr 20 1989 15:1518
Yes, we are DEFINITELY investigating the possibility of supplying the various
widgets in the SDT Widget Set (GObE, NetEd, SVN, print) to customers.
Current thought is via a layered product called the DECwindows Programming
Environment perhaps packaged with DWIGEN. We're still very early in this
planning process, so much could still change.

We're waiting until the initial releases of GObE and NetEd are complete (for
our current internal customers) before moving into the "productization"
phase. This should occur late this summer. At that time, we'll open a
Phase 0 for the product.

We have no problem with any Digital-developer application using the various
widgets in their product. We're also investigating the possibility of CMP's
using them.

    Steve,

If you need more input, please vaxmail me at gucci::weaver.
I think it is absolutely essential that GoBE be provided at some point
in decwindows developement. I've been using for quite a while now. It
works, and it makes it easy to move code which would otherwise be
diffcult to migrate (display coord .vs. world coord), plus I love the
navigation window. The only suggestion I have for improvements is
performance when dealing with a large number of points (>200,000).

    Keep up the good work.

    RE 6.

Very definitly agreed! I'm constantly getting my ears pulled back
(they're actually bigger than my nose now) by customers who are
frustrated because of the lack of OOTB graphics capabilities in
the X Window System and the high price of obtaining them through
    other products.

The conception many customers have, when they come to my class,
is that X is a graphics environment. Actually it's a windowing
environment with somewhat simple graphics capabilities. What
they were hoping for was world coordinates, display lists,
translations, rotations, and better imaging than what's provided.
Gobe won't solve everything, but it would be a step in the right
    direction.

638.8GObE, NetEd shareable *are* availableGOBBLR::MULHERENKelly Mulheren, GObE & NetEdFri Apr 21 1989 09:1725
RE .1, .4

For the record, GObE and NetEd are currently available in both OLB and shareable
image form on VMS; only object libraries on Ultrix. We recommend that layered
products use the shareables. We're comitted to making them compatible.
However, we make OLB's available for VMS because:

1)Some products may go to SDC before GObE or NetEd V1.0 is released
internally; we need to reserve the ability to make incompatible changes before
V1.0 is released.

2)There are risks involved with shareable images, e.g., version control,
upward/backward compatibility, etc. Providing OLB's lets the individual
products manage their risks.

We have discussed the possibility of providing run-time-only shareables but
don't have the process in place yet.

RE: .5, .8

Our competition (Sun) bundles their equivalent of DWIGEN with the window system.
You don't have to pay extra for it. The SDT widget set ought to be bundled,
at no extra charge.

Paul,

I'm curious. What're the Sun equivalents for DWIGEN, GObE, NetEd?

Thanks,
