| The following files show up in the decwrl::/pub/X11.contrib directory:
xconq.pat1.01 -r--r--r-- 18-APR-89 15:26:04 58705
xconq.pat1.02 -r--r--r-- 18-APR-89 15:26:04 57105
xconq5.tar.Z -r--r--r-- 18-APR-89 15:26:03 375059
I have tested these programs on ULTRIX (VAX) - and they work fine.

I tried to access the DECWRL files as DECWRL::"/pub/X11/contrib"

please point me in the direction of the un'tar'd files, or explain how to
access the files directly? Thanks.

| re: .3
Your problem is that you mis-quoted the directory. To see everything that
is in that directory, use:
dir decwrl::"/pub/X11.contrib"
Note that you used a slash instead of a . and that caused the problems.
There is a program running around that helps VMS handle .tar.Z files;
don't have a copy of it, but the ULTRIX notesfile would be the place to
look...was mentioned in the past two weeks.
Hope this helps!

pretty thorough-going ripoff of a game I used to play called CONQUEST.
XCONQ sounds like another port of CONQUEST to X-windows graphics.

X10 version to X11 just to see what a 'real' application looked like
:-) (This was '87 or early '88 so there were no decw$mumble's programs
yet and I was sick to death of ico and plaid.) Cute bitmaps for
terrain, population centers, and weaponry and it claimed that color was
supported (I didn't check). A playing turn can get damned busy once
you have a few dozen armies, cities, ships, etc. taking up your time.
There was mention of a 'game-builder' to create your own game by
choosing some historical period and the appropriate playing pieces. I
haven't followed up on it since.

It is already done for UNIX machines running TCP/IP...if someone can use Monty's

| What you have now is a shar file. It is actually a giant shell script that
creates source tree when you run it. Hence the need for a Bourne
shell (/bin/sh). I don't know if it exists on VMS.

VMS does have the Bourne shell. That is what the DEC/SHELL layered product is.
You should be able to convert the shar files on a system running DEC/SHELL.

| ONe of our DECWindows Customers also has the MIT tapes and follows
comp.sources.x. HE suggested that he was going to start work on
porting a lot of the Base X applications from MIT to VMS. I
suggested that most of it was already done.
A Submission to the DECUS library of a compendium of DEcwindows/X
tools and games would probably do more good for the popularity of
our product than anything else. Anyone violently opposed to this
idea? I would like to chase down each "porter" in turn to verify
their OK to include.

Ok, I just about have a port of XCONQ completed. Before releasing, I wanted
to ask a general question about the Unix "select" call. Within XCONQ, its
used to coordinate the multiple server connections. Currently the
only other option, within the code, is to poll the connections. Is this
where you might use the XSelectAsyncInput calls?
/Brad
|
625.27 | | FLUME::dike | | Tue May 02 1989 18:28 | 16 |
| Select is used to listen to multiple file descriptors, which can represent
files, other processes, or network connection, and probably some other things
I can't think of off hand. In X programs, it is used to listen simultaneously
to the X server for events and something else, like another process. xconq
is kind of unusual because it listens to several X servers at once. It can't
sit in an XNextEvent, because an event could come from a different display and
be ignored. So, it listens to all of the server connections at once in a
select, and when it pops out of the select, it knows which servers have events
that need processing and it calls XNextEvent with the correct display argument.
XSelectAsyncInput could be used for this. It facilitates a different style of
programming, which is not used very often in Ultrix. Most things use a
synchronous style of event processing, which you see an example of in xconq.
