Note 350.0 VAX II hangs on login 4 replies

I'll apologize in advance in case this has been asked before, but I
promise I *did* look through this file, and couldn't find a problem
quite like it. I also looked in DECwindows, but thought that this
might be a more appropriate place.
I've just brought a VAX II into Lassie's cluster, which is running
A5.1 VMS and SDC DECwindows. The system gets all the way up to the
login screen, but when you attempt to log in, all you ever see is the
icon bar at the top (and the little watch symbol telling you to wait).
I've watched the system via Sysman on Lassie, and it looks like _WSA1
tries to start up and fails repeatedly. I've also got a VS2000 in the
cluster with less memory that starts up without a hitch. I've adjusted
what are to me the obvious sysgen parameters, but there's been no
change. Once, and once only, the system attempted to start a FileView
process, which is when I saw the DECterm controller error. We haven't
been able to reproduce this, however.
Btw, all the systems run a common startup procedure. This system comes
up normally until you try to log in.
Thanks for any assistance,
Sandy

I've seen that happen. I usually kill the server process and restart
DECwindows (from a terminal).

Thanks - we tried that, but the same thing happens when you try to log
in again. I also forgot to mention that the microvax has more memory
than the vs2000, so I'd expect it to have less trouble starting up the
processes.
Any other thoughts?

Re: .2
Sorry, but I have no idea what you should do, other than to find a systems
guru (which I'm not).

Thanks, Bob. I'll try there.

| Login in to the system from a terminal after you have the DECwindows
login in its hung state, and with privileges do:
$ @sys$update:autogen savparams reboot feedback
This will re-tune and reboot the system.
I have seen this problem several times where a VAXstation is not initially
setup with enough resources to allow DECwindows to login.
