606.0. "Multi Screen Workstations" by HGOVC::KENBERKUN (People that melt) Mon Apr 17 1989 00:05

I have a solid prospect interested in multiple screen, one keyboard
workstations. I am pursuing this through CSS, since I can't find
anyone anywhere else who seems committed to it.

I would like to get a feel for the market size for this product. If
the market is large enough, I would like to pursue a busless two
screen product! This would bring our price down and allow us to sell
more. The obvious markets are dealer trading rooms and geophysicists,
as well as others.

Please send me mail if you could sell two screen one keyboard, one
pointing device workstations. I would like your estimate of how many
units you might sell over what period of time and what price range you
think would be acceptable (assume color screens, 16 meg, diskless
units for pricing estimates).

You are also invited to post comments here. I do not promise to
respond quickly to individuals, as I'm about to start a lot of
travelling.

I am cross posting this in DECwindows and WS_COMPETITIVE_MARKETING.

Thank you very much.

Ken B.

606.1What hw config are you looking at?STAR::BMATTHEWSMon Apr 17 1989 12:078
Software support for multiple screen, one keyboard, one pointing device is
in DECWindows V2 which should go to field test in June. Currently I believe
the support hardware configuration is 2 GPX's for VSII's and Mayfairs. We are
also looking at a mono and color dual head for vs2000's and pvaxes. Please try
to work with worksystems to get multi-head workstations in their future plans.
Also let us know of any sw requirements.

606.2Interest from ISVs, et al.VENOM::DLUGOSZRon Dlugosz, DTN 264-0306Mon Apr 17 1989 13:0913
    I get alot of questions obout dual-screen support from ISVs, OEMs,
    etc in class so the V2 support is definitly good news! Those looking
    for this type of support have included the one listed in .0 as well
    as general CACAM applications that require large amounts of real
    estate. I had a DEC employee in the class last week that is trying
    to convert a mapping (?) application that is running on multiple
    RAMTEK graphics terminals to this type of environment (goverment
    account).

    BTW. What is a Mayfair?

Mayfair is a vs3500 and maybe also the vs3200. Anyway it is a cvax cpu with
a qbus and gpx graphics on the qbus. It is easier for me to track the code
names but I should build myself a cheat sheet of the marketing numbers.

606.4Nice to hearHGOVC::KENBERKUNPeople that meltTue Apr 18 1989 02:3014
    I'm glad to hear the software support is coming. But I'm not real
    clear who to give input to. I'm still pursuing through CSS until
    I find a clear funding project for a two screen system.

    What configuration: 2 color screens at a reasonable cost. If you
    have to use a QBus machine, so be it, that's no unreasonable. But
    IF we could build a 2 monitor busless machine we'd have MUCH better
    price/performance.

    Still looking for market estimates...

    Contact Dave Poole in Worksystems product management. PVX::POOLE. I
    gave him a demo last week on a dual screen PVAX and he is very open to
    the idea.
