Yelp! This may be a fairly naive question; but it's driving me NUTS!
I've been trying to read through the discussions of "resource names",
and not having alot of luck. I'm looking for some way to make my
workstation use the "BIG" font, by default, for everything.
It looks as though I could specify a default font (if I knew the font
names) for each application; but what I really want is some sort of
global "BIG FONT" switch -- instead of customizing each window after it
appears.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
KC

Re: .0 In DECterm, select the big font in Customize Window and then save current settings from the Customize menu. For other applications, set *font: "-*-Terminal-Medium-*-Normal--*-180-*-*-*-*-*-1" -- Bob

Isn't this rather over-simplified (and dangerous?) What about
applications (such as Notes) that use multiple fonts? And besides,
haven't there been warnings not to use the terminal fonts in general
use?
Re. .0:
I believe there are some applications you will not be able to affect
via the defaults. For example, I have never seen a way to adjust the
font used by the Help widget (doesn't mean there isn't one...) And I
believe the current release of Bookreader overrides resource settings
with internal values.
Are you aware of the private_server_setup mechanism? You can tell ther
server, at DECW startup, that you have a 100 dpi monitor, and it will
adjust the fonts used on a global basis. You do, however, lose the
ability to tell DECterm to use the small font... Look at the file
sys$manager:decw$private_server-setup.com.

Here is one idea, not necessarily guaranteed, and not necessarily a GOOD idea. If you have a 75 dpi screen (i.e. a 19 inch monitor on all but the Firefox), you could fake things out and tell the server you have a 100dpi screen (see SYS$MANAGER:DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_STARTUP.TEMPLATE). That would make it use the 100 dpi font set which would show up larger on a 75 dpi monitor. A real hack, and for VMS V5.1, not all applications work correctly with the 100 dpi fonts, but maybe worth a try. Burns
