I have a customer with an interesting problem. Maybe somebody out there can help me find a solution. This customer has circuit board layout files stored in Postscript format. He would like to write a DECwindows based application that allows him to display and manipulate these files. From my understanding of the Postscript Extensions to X, once we make the extensions available, he will be able to write just such an application. But, he needs to get started now. Our competition is SUN, and they're telling him he can write a window-based application on their platform today that will allow users to display and manipulate the postscript files. He wants to go with DEC, but he can't wait for the Postscript Extensions to become available. Does anyone have any creative ideas on how this customer might proceed until we have the Postscript Extensions? Thanks in advance...

Try the notesfile REGENT::POSTSCRIPT. Sun's position is something of a red herring. Even with NeWS (or with our PostScript Extensions for that matter), the customer will still have a devil of a time writing a program that reads and manipulates PostScript files. E.g. how will he parse the file into manipulable pieces? The customer may be better off looking for canned programs that can read EPSF ("encapsulated PostScript"). For example, it's my understanding that Adobe Illustrator on Macs or PCs can do this. Again, please check the PostScript notesfile. |
