| If you want reasonably priced VAXstaions, try the VAXstation 3100
(avoid the VAXstation II GPX if you can because DECwindows price/performance
makes the VAXstation 3100 better choices)
The VAXtation 3100 will run both VMS and ULTRIX.
However, if you have users who want UNIX workstations that 'beg' for more
work, then, the DECstation 3100 (PMAX), is what you really want.
(I am assuning that you are not interested in 3-D...there're fast VAXstations
that will do 3D very well too.)
I am not in sales, so you have to get more help elsewhere on the prices.
good luck,
Kris..

| Unfortunately, getting either a VS3100 or DS3100 internally seems to
require VP approval.... VS2000s are in good supply, just get them with
the maximum memory.

Word around here is that DS3100s are more plentiful than vaxes...

It's go tto be difficult having a great piece of machinery and not
enough software to run on it...
Does the DS3100 REQUIRE that graphics apps be written in DECwindows
or X? I'm under the impression that the Ultirx Workstation Product
isn't available so that EVERYTHING has to be ported...
Jan
I think I got that right, but I'd like confirmation...

| The DS3100 requires Ultrix Worksystem Software V2.0A. This version
of UWS only provides X version 11 servers.

I have been running PMAX (aka DS3100) hardware and software since field test.
My Utrix installation software calls itself :
"Ultrix WS V2.0 (RISC)"
DECwindows functionality is not very different between VAX and PMAX.
Dave is correct - the PMAX runs an X11 server.
All native DECwindows applications such as OTB applications, all run on the
PMAX.
The *big* difference is that, the PMAX is significantly fast when running
DECwindows.
Layered applications like DECwrite, I believe, are in the process of being
ported.
