I have 4 KODAK KIMS workstations (VID08) made by DEC. From what I have learned, they are "diskless" VAXstation 2000's with a VR419 monochrome high resolution monitor. They have 6 Mbytes of memory and have a DECnet connection. They can successfully "boot" off of the network device and be added as a member to a cluster. Before the site-specific startup happens, I receive the following error messages: %SYSGEN-W-OPENIN, error opening SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE]GACDRIVER.EXE %SYSGEN-E-FNF, file not found When DECwindows attempts to start up, it tells me that no graphics device was found. Another anomoly is that when a show cluster/continuous command is issued, the hardware id says "VAXstation 2000 GPX". I didn't know there was such a beast! Is there any hope of having a driver for this system?

The Kapri (aka KIMS, aka ACTOR II) is supported ONLY by VWS (WINDOW_SYSTEM = 2). You must get the VWS V4.1 FT kit (see the notesfile VWSENG::VWS). Yes they are diskless and have 150dpi 19" monochrome monitors. They are direct intensity devices (4 intensity levels) that look something like a GPX in the hardware and are based on the VS2000 CPU. They are designed for Kodak and are not a standard corporate product. They are replacements for Microfiche readers and display raster images from optical disks. The hardware also includes CCITT compression/decompression logic in the image pipeline along with hardware image scaling and convolution. The system is used as a bitonal system in use, the extra 2 grey levels are used for anti-aliasing. There are no plans (to my knowledge) of supporting DECwindows on the Actor-II. _Fred | |||||

FYI - While I haven't tried it yet (hmmm maybe I'll give it a shot tommorrow) install both DECwindows V5.1 and VWS V4.1 on the cluster and boot up with VWS (window_system = 2), then look at note 101 and copy the VWSDECW000.A saveset from VWSENG::VWS$KITS:[VWS_TOOLS] and install it. The from the system account (while running VWS) invoke @SYS$MANAGER:DECW$STARTUP.COM to start DECwindows... The X11 emulator under VWS is the only means that I know of to get DECwindows on the Kapri. Disclaimer: There are still bugs being worked on in the V4.1 release for Kapri. A new kit should be available in the next several weeks to correct most of them. _Fred |
