540.0. "Diminishing resolution on 8-plane system" by NECSC::LEVY (A leaf of all colors) Wed Apr 05 1989 10:01
I've noticed an interesting phenomenon that I was hoping someone could explain.
I've got an 8-meg PVAX running VMS 5.1-B and SDC DECwindows. This is an
8-plane color system (I think...256 simultaneous colors = 8-plane, right?).
I've been playing around with the XPASTE utility mentioned in the DW_EXAMPLES
conference and, as was mentioned there, the resolution of the .RGB files
was less than spectacular on this system (they are meant to be displayed
on 24-plane systems). Well...sometimes...and that's where the curiosity
arises.
I've found that, if I look at some of the pictures (the SHUTTLE is a good
example) shortly after I've stopped and re-started my session (within 2 hours
or so), the resolution is quite good. Not, I'm sure, what the FIREFOX
would do, but ok. However, as time goes by, the resolution of the pictures
gets steadily worse.
Does anybody have any idea why this deterioration occurs? What resource is
being consumed that would cause this? Is there a way to prevent it?
Any and all ideas would be welcome.
Thanks,
- Dave_who_ONLY_looks_at_SHUTTLE_SPACE_MILL_and_JUPITER :^)

| Since the 8 plane PVAX is a pseudo color system, and only has one hardware
color map, I would assume that if you have other applications using color, then
you would subtract the number of entries in the color map, therefore giving
you your "deterioration" of the images. When you log out of your session,
you reset the server and therefore the color map.

540.2 | VS2000 Resolution problem wiht One window. | WOODRO::EARLY | Bob Early CSS/NSG Dtn 264-6252 | Wed May 03 1989 14:42 | 13 |
| re: .0
The reply in .1 seems to make sense. On a VS2000, at least once,
the "resolution"for one of the two windows was blurred, as if the
focus had been maladjusted.
Upon exiting the window (logout); then creating a new window, the
problem did not return. This has only happened once (within my memory)
of this old system (its been almost 30 days now that's its been
running). ;^)
