498.0. "a heavy switch..." by SQM::HARLOW () Wed Mar 29 1989 09:09

The session manager allows choosing a preferred language, such
as German or French, through the customize-international menu option.
This is great for client workstation systems. My question is this:
For high-end compute client systems without graphics capabilities, how
    will language switching be implemented?

There is no customize-international menu option in the V5.1 product.
The stuff you are seeing was removed after field test and is expected
to return in a future version.

This customization works on "high-end compute client systems" the
same way that other session manager customization works. When you
make a choice with the session manager, the choice is recorded in
a special property on the root window of the X server. When clients
start up (even on remote systems) they read this property and act
accordingly. Thus if 20 workstations are being accessed by clients
on a single big system, each workstation could be running using its
    own language selection.

Thanks for the reply, Vince! When I mentioned the
'Customize-International' menu option, I was referencing my workstation
which is running UWS V2.0. I am aware that the VMS V5.1 product
does not have this functionality, but it is my understanding that
it is soon to be implemented (am I off-base here?). Anyways, my
question relates to a client system, say a VAX 8800, that does not
have a graphics terminal and, therefore, does not have a session
manager executing. How will I choose a preferred language
on such a system for a remote server displaying the application?

Jim,

My understanding is that this is regarded as a server side piece of information.
Therefore, a client which knows about internationalization setup and which is
running remotely would get this information from the property on the root
window on which it is displayed. Using this approach makes it so that the
control of this resides with the user. And it doesn't matter where the
client is running.
