466.0. "Can two versions be installed?" by NEXUS::B_WACKER () Thu Mar 23 1989 10:51

I'm in DECwindows support at CSC/CS and would like to know if it is
possible to have both 5.1 and 5.2 loaded on the same system and be
able to switch between them? The point is to be able to verify a
problem on 5.1 then run it on 5.2 to see if it is already fixed. I'd
rather not have to reboot, but whatever works...

Just set up a vaxcluster with at least one member running vms v5.1
and at least one member running vms v5.2.

My understanding is that a "rolling upgrade" between 5.1 and 5.2
will be supported. However there may be individual base levels
of 5.2 with problems in this regard.

466.2multiple DECwindows versions on same system?NEXUS::B_WACKERFri Mar 24 1989 18:2728
Sorry, I meant putting different DECwindows versions on one (higher) VMS
version, particularly the server side as I can set host to different
client versions.

Install shows the following decw$ files on my 5.2ft system:
   DECW$SESSION
   DECW$TERMINAL
   DECW$WINMGR
   DECW$DWTLIBSHR
   DECW$LOGINOUT
   DECW$TRANSPORT_COMMON
   DECW$TRANSPORT_DECNET
   DECW$TRANSPORT_LOCAL
   DECW$XLIBSHR

If I grab the same files off a 5.1 system can I rename them and use
logicals to get a "5.1" server?

If that is possible, could setting logicals followed by decw$startup
restart switch me back and forth with 5.2?

The reason is if a customer has a problem I first need to duplicate it
on their (5.1) version, then check it on 5.2 to see if it is already
fixed. Now I'm running 5.2 and don't know how valid it is to check
their 5.1 problem (with a 5.1 client) and my 5.2 server.

       	The only way to be 100% sure (and that is what our customers
       deserve) is to use two different system disks. Anything else is
       a hack and leaves too much room for error..
