464.0. "Installation blues on a PVAX" by INFACT::DATZMAN (Indianapolis Field Applications Center) Thu Mar 23 1989 09:11

I am having trouble upgrading a PVAX from VMS 5.1-TB0 to 5.1-B. I have
two disks on the PVAX, DKA300 and DKA200. DKA200 is the system disk. I
have the VMS savesets in DKA300:[000000]. When I run vmsinstal I get the
following errors:

%VMSINSTAL-I-RESTORE, Restoring product saveset A ...
%VMSINSTAL-E-NOSAVESET, Saveset A cannot be restored.
%BACKUP-E-READERR, error reading DKA300:[000000]VMSU1051.A;1
-BACKUP-E-BLOCKCRC, software block CRC error
%BACKUP-E-READERR, error reading DKA300:[000000]VMSU1051.A;1

%BACKUP-E-BLOCKLOST, block of DKA300:[000000]VMSU1051.A;1 lost due to unrecovera

%BACKUP-E-FIDERROR, unexpected file change in VMI$ROOT:[SYSUPD.VMSU1051]KITINSTA

cks 104 through 115
%BACKUP-W-INCFILATR, incomplete file attribute data for VMI$ROOT:[SYSUPD.VMSU105

%BACKUP-E-VBNMISSING, VMI$ROOT:[SYSUPD.VMSU1051]MOVE.COM;1 has missing blocks 1
through 2
%BACKUP-E-READERR, error reading DKA300:[000000]VMSU1051.A;1
-BACKUP-E-BLOCKCRC, software block CRC error
%BACKUP-E-BLOCKLOST, block of DKA300:[000000]VMSU1051.A;1 lost due to unrecovera

-BACKUP-E-HDRCRC, software header CRC error
%BACKUP-E-READERR, error reading DKA300:[000000]VMSU1051.A;1
-BACKUP-E-HDRCRC, software header CRC error
%BACKUP-E-VBNMISSING, VMI$ROOT:[SYSUPD.VMSU1051]STARTUP.UP2;12 has missing block
s 22 through 36

I tried a ANA/DISK/REPAIR DKA300: and it said:
%VERIFY-I-OPENQUOTA, error opening QUOTA.SYS
-SYSTEM-W-NOSUCHFILE, no such file
%VERIFY-W-BADHEADER, file (35,9,1) [000000]SYSLOST.DIR;1
        invalid file header
%VERIFY-W-ALLOCCLR, blocks incorrectly marked allocated
        LBN 172032 to 172034, RVN 1
%VERIFY-W-BADDIRENT, invalid file identification in directory entry [000000]SYSL
OST.DIR;1

Plus some other %VERIFY-W-LOSTHEADER errors on some non important files.

Is there anything I can do to correct this or am I hosed? Any help is
MUCH appreciated.

This doesn't have anything to do with DECwindows - it looks like you have a bad
copy of the kit. Get another one and apply it to the backup you made of
your system disk before you installed the bad kit. (You DID make a backup,
didn't you?)

464.2Savesets are on the user diskINFACT::DATZMANIndianapolis Field Applications CenterThu Mar 23 1989 10:167
The kit I am installing from is located on the USER disk not the
SYSTEM disk. DOes this make a difference? Anyway, I am going to
get a new copy of saveset A and try again. Thanks.

No, shouldn't make a difference. Sounds like your user disk needs to be
"repaired".

464.4Analyze/disk didn't do muchINFACT::DATZMANIndianapolis Field Applications CenterThu Mar 23 1989 11:497
    I tried ANALYZE/DISK/REPAIR DKA300: and I got some %VERIFY-W-LOSTHEADER
warnings on some non critical user files. I then retried the
installation and got the same errors ans in .0. Any ideas?

Sounds like the kit itself is bad, I'd blow it away and get a fresh copy.
