What is the version number of the DECwindows software which shipped with V5.1 of VMS? I've seen it referred to as "V5.1", which makes a lot of sense, as it is shipped with VMS. I've also seen it referenced as "V1.0", with the next version to be released being "V2.0". Could someone clarify what's what? My personal preference is to number the versions equally with the VMS version is ships with (ala DECnet/VAX) because then you're not trying to remember twenty different version numbers, even though all the different "products" ship together. -mjg

The version number is V5.1 but we refer to the next major chunk of new functionality as DECWindows V2 because it isn't yet tied to a specific VMS release. The DECWindows development is by and large asynchronous to most other VMS development and tends to be integrated with other VMS components late in the development cycle. Bill

Similarly, we referred to the first release of DECwindows as V1 internally until it shipped. The only "official" names are the same as the VMS names that we ship with (on VMS). I think on Ultrix, they number consecutively from the first release of UWS (Ultrix Windowing System), which is greater than V1.0, (since earlier UWS versions supported ran with X10) but not equal to the Ultrix number. UEG people, please feel free to correct me. Burns

I notice that the idents in the images themselves are of the form "DECW V5.1".... It is all a tad confusing... Steve |
