439.0. "keyboard and print screen" by 32291::MURPHY (Innovation through Quality) Mon Mar 20 1989 11:01

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I could find an
answer either here or in the on-line doc set.

Trite question: I am preparing a presentation and have a number
of windows opened, sized and placed. I wish to get a snap shot
of them and place the image in a file. No problem so far, I've
    done that

The problem arises when I want to pull down a menu and get a snapshot
of that! Upon pulling down past the bottom of the pulldown, it
stays open (great!). I've positioned the session manager window
in the bottom of the screen, so it isn't included in the image.
However, upon selecting print screen, I loose the "open" menu in
the desired window (which isn't the session manager).

I've looked for a key sequence / accelerator / keyboard command
that will allow the mouse to leave the menu "open", yet still take
a picture of the screen. At this point, I'll settle for the entire
screen and not just partials as I have been doing.

Any words of wisdom for the witless (my wits are gone!)?

    -Dave Murphy

439.2ULTRIX can do it tooSMURF::HOFFMANanywhere in the universeMon Mar 20 1989 19:4610
Also, the "savimg" program on ULTRIX... its image format,
however, is somewhat private in the sense that only ULTRIX
systems have printer software that will print it. The format
and printer utilities do support color as well as sixels and
PostScript. The trick with savimg is to execute the command
remotely with the DISPLAY variable set to the system with
    the interesting picture.

    RE .1 & .2

Thanks for the info. I'll look into UTOX and see if I can find
anything there. Unfortunately, the slides I want are from a VMS
application, and I do not have easy access to an ULTRIX machine
as of yet (working on it tho...).

The following technique helps you with only SDC products.

   1. Select 'Capture Entire Screen' from Session Manager's 'print screen'
      menu
   2. Dialog box appears.
   3. Arrange windows. If you don't like to include SM's window itself,
      hide it behind another one.
*** Make sure, at this moment, keybord input focus is connected to
          SM's dialog box.
   4. Select pulldown or popup menu ( if this operation changes input focus
to this application's window, you are unlucky... This technique is
      not valid.)
   5. Press <Retrun> key.

See notes 174.0 for captured by this technitque.

Unfortunately, input focus is changed....and that is what is

The application should not take the input focus when a pulldown or popup or
scroll bar is manipulated. This is a (minor) bug in the application and should
be reported as such to the developers. If they fix the bug then you can get
your pictures.
