Hi, I have extensively used DECwindows on a VMS-machine and have got to like it very much. Recently, I also installed DECwindows on an ULTRIX-machine, because I wanted to demonstrate that we have a single architecture and user-interface for both operating systems. This is at least, what we always told our customers. Unfortunately, I got aware that the ULTRIX- and VMS versions of DECwindows are not that identical as one would have expected. Even the 'login-window' is different in the two versions (instead of 'Username' in the VMS-version, it is 'login' in the ULTRIX version). Often, there are only little inconsistencies (i.e. the file filter in the VUE-window is on the top, wheras the file filter in the UE-window is at the bottom of the window), but which are not necessary. It is clear that the menu-items and content of the UE-window must differ for the two operating systems, but there is no reason that the arrangement of the window has to be different. The same with the Mail-application. I want to point out again, that I like DECwindows very much! Regards! Evi

Good thing you noticed the differences... One important thing you have to realize also - the world will not change overnite because of DECwindows or what DIGITAL thinks is the "best" thing for the rest of the world.....change will come hopefully ....but we have to "win" the User Interface war first. Too much religion exist today ! Kris | |||||

The same with the Mail-application. As far as Mail goes, on VMS two main window interfaces are supported, paned and outline. Outline is the default, but you can choose paned, which is similar to the Ultrix Mail interface. If you use the paned interface, both products should appear and behave quite similarly. There are unavoidable differences, owing to the different underlying mail systems, but overall they are consistent. Mike |
