434.0. "A Silly Question" by KIRKWD::FRIEDMAN () Fri Mar 17 1989 17:27

    Will this work?

    1. Install DECwindows on a VAX 6000-class machine.

    2. Log in on a VT330. Note that I do not want to do any
windowing on the VT330; I know I won't be able to do
that. I just want to be able to log in normally
                  and use EDT, MAIL, etc.

The answer to your question is "yes".

    DECWindows *requires* you install VMS.

Silly question in response: Why install DECWINDOWS?

Methinks you misinterpret the functionality of Decwindows.
Decwindows is a windowing system for bitmap type displays. VT330's
are not bitmap type displays. Decwindows will not work with a
        vt330. (period).

Decwindows is however a multipart system. (client/server) It is
possible to install decwindows on a non workstation such as a 6xx0
and have it display on a Vaxstation (also running decwindows).

    If the question is:

"Will installing DECwindows on my non-workstation VAX disrupt or
destroy my ability to use applications from a charter cell
	 terminal?"

    The answer is:

"No - the software is smart enough to do the right thing. Notes and
Mail and whatever will still run fine on you VT terminal and will
use DECwindows when displaying to a DECwindows screen"
