353.0. "Page read error when trying to bring up DECWindows" by GEORGI::CRAWFORD () Wed Mar 08 1989 09:36

    Yesterday, I installed Decwindows (DECW051) on a vms 5.1 system
    running VWS. The first installation attempt failed. I tried again,
    and received no notification that the installation had any problems.

    I shutdown the system. Then did b/1 and set the window system to
    1.

    The system booted on up with apparently no problems...it did an
    autogen to reset the parameters and rebooted itself.

    The system came up and created the process to start decwindows,
    but it gives this error message:

     Page read error, reason mask=00, virtual address=000E7E60,
    pc=00061c57, psl=03c00000

    Decwindows will never start after this. I can log into the system
    through the opcom window. If I try to start decwindows manually,
    I get the same error.

    Does anyone know what may have caused this. Can it be recovered.

    Would reinstallation of Decwindows work.

    Thanks for any info.

    Pam

    I would check the installation guide and the release notes to see if
    some system parameter is not set correctly. In particular have you
    checked to see if you have enough global pages and sections left before
    you start DECwindows? Are your process quotas correct? In particular
    do you have enough pagefilequota? Do you have anything in
    MODPARAMS.DAT which would effect DECwindows operation?

I checked the things you suggested and can find nothing that seems out of kilter.
However, I'm not too well oriented with decwindows yet. Does anything look
amiss below. I recently did the same install on another system very similar
to the problem system, I did not have this problem at all.

I also set the pipeline quota in NCP to be 10000.

353.3error messages *sometimes* mean what they say, you know!MU::PORTERwhat's in a name?Wed Mar 08 1989 14:1110
This may seem a little obvious, but why don't you believe the message?
"Page read error" could mean just that -- a hardware error on the disk.
Chances are that the bad block is in the middle of an important DECwindows
image.

The system messages manual suggests checking the disk with ANAL/DISK/READ_CHECK.

It may just be a bad spot on the disk. In which case, once the block
is recorded as "bad", reinstalling DECwindows will fix up your problems.
