re .0,.1
Probably, in about 40-50 notes that have already been written. That
probably doesn't help you for the moment, but if you can be more
specific, I'll reply with what you need to do.
Q1. Are you on the Ultrix or VMS workstation?
Q2. What level of transparency is needed (same on VMS and Ultrix, Ultrix
user needs to perform set host and VMS DCL commands, visa versa, etc.)?
Q3. Anything specific in mind? Transparent printing of Ultrix file to
VMS-based printer? Start Bookreader on VMS and display on Ultrix?
Have 3D Globe running on DS3100 and displaying on VS3100 (VMS) and
DS3100 (Ultrix).

For the Jan 10-13 DECtop announcement, I made a goal of the NYA ACT demos
to include both VMS and Ultrix DECwindows interoperability and the
VMS/Ultrix Connection transparency.
What we did was have three key systems:
VAX 6200 VMS 5.x DECwindows, VMS/Ultrix NFS server host
LAVc
VS2000 6MB, diskless, mono, booting VMS DECwindows off
the VAX 6200
DS3100 Ultrix, 16MB, Color
On the DS3100, we set up an account 'actdemo' which would startup and
layout the applications upon login. At the top of the screen would be
an extremely modified 'xsh' menu bar for selecting and firing off the
applications to be started locally.
On the VS2000, after booting of VAX 6200, the user would login and
SET HOST to the DS3100. Upon logging in to 'actdemo2', the user would
find the same menu bar displayed at the top of the VS2000 window. After
that the VMS user could iconify or exit the terminal emulator used to log
into the DS3100 and use the only the menu bar to startup. If it isn't
obvious, one could have the DS3100 startup the menu bar on the VS2000
automatically and with a little bit of luck/timing all would work fine.
Here is where the VAX 6200 plays another role behind the scenes. As the
VS2000 user starts up applications, all of them execute on the DS3100 (by
choice). However, depending on which application is invoked, the RISC
executables may actually be stored (using NFS) on the VAX 6200 and they
will be loaded over the network to the DS3100 prior to starting the
application running and having the user interface displayed on the
VS2000.
We maintain this environment for the NYA ACT. We keep a DS3100 (used for
porting and benchmarking) at 2 Penn Plaza, NY with a duplicate of the
actdemo account (including the menu bar and executables). However, the
system is not stable enough (in terms of availability) to post it for
access at the moment.
If this is of interest, please send me mail and I will provide a way to
access the system to copy the information for the DS3100. In the training
I gave the NYA DWTs (district workstation teams), we reviewed the demos
and key messages, including interoperability, and the DWTs used this
environment throughout the roadshows.

P.S. (Chris Graham (Eastern URC) assisted in getting the demos
available. George Brothers (Palo Alto) provided some of the initial DS3100
demos when we needed them last year).
