260.0. "some general questions ..." by KETJE::PUTMANS (Close that Window, please) Tue Feb 21 1989 10:47

Hi some questions from a customer.

- On which version of X11 is DECw based?( X11.2 or X11.3)

- It seems that in the X11 network protocol there is a choice between the order
of sending the bits (Most Sign.Bit or Least Sign.Bit). SUN seems to use
MSB, (i think) we are using LSB, how can this work together ?

thanks,
Eric

    RE. Byte Swapping

The server automatically handles byte swapping for you, based on
data sent by your application to the server when the connection is
    established.

Regarding the version - the last I saw in print said X11.2, however
since we are using the same intrinsics as the current MIT version
(or so I've been told) .... well that brings up a good question...

DECwindows is based on X11R2 with some specifics included from R3. The
intrinsics in DECwindows are the R3 intrinsics as is the font specification
stuff. There might be more; this is from memory and I am not a DECWdeveloper

My understanding from UEG is that PMAX is closer to R3 than other DEC WS.
The VAX versions(both VMS and ULTRIX) tend to be closer to R2.
