206.0. "Kudos" by WINERY::GRANT (Live free or WISH you had.) Wed Feb 15 1989 00:13

Though we often complain about the holes in this version of DECwindows, it is
truly a landmark product. I'd like to thank all the engineers who made the
attached press possible with a REAL LIVE PRODUCT. Making VMS and Ultrix
sing the same song was not easy, but well worth the competitive advantage
this gives us! Sorry if you've seen the attached, but if you haven't, take a
few minutes to read it.

And thanks to marketing for working their buns off to get the press to pay
attention!

Keep it up!

Consultant and Press Quotes -- DECtop, DECwindows and OSF

DECWINDOWS AND OSF ANNOUNCEMENTS -- PRESS AND CONSULTANT QUOTES
---------------------------------------------------------------

"The importance of DECwindows' common programming interface to our
industry is that ISVs will be able to provide, and we will be able to
buy, a single application compatible with multiple platforms. The
savings from this in training time alone could render many operations
cost-effective."

     	-- InterConsult's "Corporate Publishing", Jan. 16, 1989

"...the real significance of the new VAXstation and DECstation
worksystems is to be found more in their use of DECwindows to deliver
the promise of distributed computing to the end user, no matter
whether that user is in a technical or commercial environment."

-- Michael Goulde, Director, CAP International
     	   Business Wire, Jan. 10, 1989

"Without the OSF buying into DECwindows, this workstation announcement
would have represented just another proprietary offering. Now, with
the core of DECwindows destined to become an industry standard,
Digital has a distinct advantage in the marketplace."

-- Ajit Kapoor, Senior V.P., CAP International
     	   Business Wire, Jan. 10, 1989

"OSF's decision... is about as good a choice as possible."

"The real winner in OSF's choice, however, is DEC. The choice will give
DEC a tremendous competitive advantage, since DEC will have virtually the
only proprietary hardware and software environments that will be able to
run programs written for OSF Unix.

-- Will Zachmann, Canopus Research, in "PC Week", Jan. 16, 1989

"Forrester believes Digital has made the correct moves by recognizing
the importance of the desktop and realizing that it will consist of a
combination of PCs and workstations. Digital has correctly
ascertained that users and developers have a real need for a common
graphical user interface and consistent set of development tools for
both PCs and workstations."

     	-- John McCarthy, Forrester Research,
"The Professional Systems Bulletin", Jan. 10, 1989

"The selection of the DECwindows toolkit by OSF and Digital's bundling
of an identical toolkit for ULTRIX and VMS are attractive lures for
software developers."

"Not surprisingly, the OSF selection committee stayed close to MIT's X
Window specification. What it looked for was a toolkit that
simplified the programmer's job of writing new applications. Digital
Equipment presented the most advanced toolkit technology, one that has
been through a fair amount of user testing.

-- The Seybold Report on Desktop Publishing, Vol. 3, No. 5

"We consider the MS-DOS DECwindows Display Facility to be the keystone
of DEC's desktop integration strategy... With this product, the pieces
fall into place."

"Because the OSF has decided to use the DECwindows API, we foresee
minimal risk for ISVs and users in developing DECwindows applications
now."

"Office users are winners with the January 10 announcements, not
because of the workstations, but because of the software."

"The introduction of DECwindows, DECdecision, DECwrite and VAXimage
transforms NAS from vaporware to software."

"...DEC has left open a wide range of value-added market opportunities
for business/office ISVs. By developing applications which support
DECwindows and CDA, these ISVs will be able to fit their products
seamlessly into DEC's evolving integrated office environment. We
believe it will be several more years before IBM will be able to
deliver on the same promise with SAA."

     	-- Peter Schay, Gartner Group,
"Strategic Analysis Report", Jan. 30, 1989

"The products -- particularly DECwindows for VMS, UNIX and MS-DOS --
also draw praise. 'In hardware, it's a faster one of this or that,'
said Michael Leavitt, manager of computer integrated manufacturing
for General Electric. 'But in software, DECwindows and CDA looked
revolutionary.'"

     	-- Digital Review, Jan. 16, 1989

"'With DECwindows, I can write source code that's shielded from the
operating system. DEC is letting you use the strong points of both
VMS and UNIX and program in the environment you prefer, McKee said.'"

     	-- PC Week, Jan. 16, 1989

"'DEC is positioning itself as everybody's favorite integrator with
DECwindows and its Network Application Support,' said Michael Goulde,
director of CAP International's Corporation Information Solutions
Group."

     	-- InfoWorld, Jan. 16, 1989

"Digital 'stacked the deck' by delivering powerful DECwindows
development tool kits to hundreds of leading application developers...
well over a year ago."

     	-- EE Times, Dec. 26, 1988

"DECwindows caught the eye of many government agency managers who have
been finding it difficult to orchestrate the transition from
proprietary environments to open ones."

     	-- UNIX Today, Jan. 23, 1989
