Well, you can do 99% of that (and indeed we do) . The only thing that
you can't do as easily as under VWS is to get windows to automatically
go in the "right" places (especially DECterms).
The best way of finding out how to do this is to go and ask someone
else in your group who has already done it - it takes a bit of hacking
to get the whole thing set up. You could also look through all the
notes in this conference and the previous one, if you have a spare week
or two !

| I leave finding the specific notes as an exercise to the reader
(hint: Notes has wonderful commands called SEARCH and DIR/TITLE).

> FileView, and DECterm process have ?
This is described in a previous note in the notesfile, go there
for more details. Basically, the session manager executes
DECW$LOGIN.COM, and FileView and DECterm execute LOGIN.COM.
DECterm has a single controller process which controls all
DECterm windows (each of which is running a LOGINOUT process).
> 2) Be able to have my defaults files somewhere else than my top-level
> directory - eg [.decwindows], as per login.com in "lgicmd"
$DEFINE DECW$USER_DEFAULTS (which I believe is documented). Note
that it doesn't apply to session manager or DECterm .DAT files
(for more discussion of that see a previous note in this conference).
> 3) Be able to set up a server on the main big cluster to do things
> (I'm not sure if this is possible but I thought I'd ask).
There's an earlier topic in this conference describing methods of
achieving this. You do mean, of course, setting up *clients* on
the big cluster, since the DECwindows server is the thing that
runs your display.
> 4) Be able to set the position/title/size of the various windows/ICONs -
> especially DECterm ones.
See the CHILD tool (again, a previous note exists on this topic in
this conference).
> 5) Have a 'VWSBanner' set up - I love the little system display
> with FreePages/Faults and CPU usage.
See the DECW$BANNER tool (a previous note in this conference).
> 6) be able to focus all messages through to the session manager
> - I thought this was what it was supposed to be for.
Yep, I believe there is a previous note in this conference (or
in DECWINDOWS_OLD) on this.

Some how the above conjures op the picture in my mind of poor Winton
trapped forever inside a DecWindow rapping furiously on the glass
trying to get out. :-)
