181.0. "Share your favourite resource names here" by LESLIE::LESLIE (Phase what?) Sun Feb 12 1989 17:21

    Share your favourite undocumented resource here.

    Mine? Put

    wm*flash: true

    in your DECW$XDEFAULTS.DAT.

    The effect is... amusing. (Obviously you have to log out and back in
    again for it to take effect - see how long it takes you to work out what
    is going on).

    Whats your favourite?

    I'd still kinda' like to see a collection of resources for all the

    (!!!) someone from each program group could take the time to make
    them available.

I believe that blinking is turned on by default. So you would have to place
something in DECW$SYSTEM_DEFAULTS:DECW$LOGIN.DAT to turn it off.

     Well, it keeps them from consuming CPU because of blinking cursors.
     MAIL still has to check periodically to see if new mail has come in.
     I forget the resource that controls how often.

    Of course I meant this stops them *unnecessarily* consuming CPU.

181.11Depends on your point of view, now doesn't it?KALKIN::BUTENHOFBetter Living Through Concurrency!Tue Feb 28 1989 12:378
Blinking cursors, of course, are only an "unnecessary" consumption of CPU if
you don't like blinking cursors. Similarly, the mail polling for new messages
is unnecessary if you don't want it to do that.

Personally, I rather like both...

    	that may be true, but if you walk through the VaxNotes FT
    conference you'll see many instances of people rather concerned by all
    that CPU going down the toilet on systems that have minimal resources

181.14*Slider: lightGrey causes defaults to failDRIFT::WOODLaughter - the best medicineWed Mar 08 1989 12:2420
I added *Slider: lightGrey to my DECW$XDEFAULTS.DAT file per reply .1. Since
doing that I have had a problem with my saved defaults not being used.

For example, I change my pointer color, or session manager icon startup state,
or window background color, save the new values as the default, immediately
try and "use last saved settings" and everything seems to go back to system
default. Same thing happens when I log in - system defaults. If I remove the
*Slider: lightGrey line from my xdefaults file, everything works correctly
again.

Also, it may be coincidence, but while this problem is occuring, I have
intermittent problems with not being able to log back in after logging out.
When this occurs, the screen clears after quitting the current session, but the
window requesting username and password never re-appears. I end up rebooting,
but there must be a better way to fix this.

Any ideas?

John

Check your DECW$XDEFAULTS.DAT file for syntax errors. The resource manager is
not very graceful about recovering from such things. That is one of the reasons
why VMS DECwindows doesn't support customization by editing resource files.

181.16It looks OK to meDRIFT::WOODLaughter - the best medicineWed Mar 08 1989 13:4846
The only change from a working DECW$XDEFAULTS.DAT to not working is the addition
of the slider line as the first line of the file. The exact line (copied from
my file, not retyped) is:

*Slider: lightGrey

The entire file is included below. Again, if I remove the first line, it works
perfectly. So if there is a syntax error somewhere else, why does it work then?

John

DECW$XDEFAULTS.DAT that fails due to the first line:

181.18Capital "L"?AGBEAR::HORNERA.G.Bear, Low tech teddy bearWed Mar 08 1989 17:1011
    Also, I don't know if this counts as a syntax error, but the RGB file
    only defines the following two forms of light gray:

    $decw$define_server "DECW$RGB_light grey" "43008,43008,43008"
    $decw$define_server "DECW$RGB_LightGrey" "43008,43008,43008"

    neither of which matches your definition (the L is capitalized in the

181.19MU::PORTERwhat's in a name?Wed Mar 08 1989 17:328

colour names lookup is case-blind (see XLookupColor, p12-35, in Xlib

in any case, bogus colour names aren't a syntax error, they just
fail to work.

     I don't understand why the *minWidth and *minHeight settings in

>>	*minWidth:			170
>>	*minHeight:			120
>>	Cardfiler.minWidth:		150

     They aren't restricted to the Cardfiler. Or is the Cardfiler the
     only application that uses those specific resources?

     Dan

181.21GOSOX::RYANDECwindows MailThu Mar 09 1989 08:329
	re .20: If the application sets these at run time, it overrides
	the resources you set. I can't speak for other applications,
	but Mail does set minWidth and minHeight based on your fonts so,
	for example, in the paned main window you can always see at least
	one line in each pane. This is what applications are supposed to
	do.

     Put the following into DECW$WINMGR.DAT

wm*Decw$Session.iconStyle:	0
*WmIconForm.IconStyle:		1

re: .38

Cardfiler will accept a filename as a parameter if you define cardfiler as a
foreign command.

Example:

$ !
$ CARDFILER := $SYS$SYSTEM:DECW$CARDFILER
$ SPAWN/NOWAIT/INPUT=NL:/PROCESS="CardFiler" -
	CARDFILER DECW$Phone.CARD

That should get you part of the way ...

181.43A few questions??7014::HARRISFri May 26 1989 14:3677
     I'm have a few problems with stuff I'm setting in my DECW$XDEFAULTS.DAT
  file.

  1) How can I set the X position of DECterms. I can set the Y position
     with {DECW$TERMINAL.y: #}, but using {DECW$TERMINAL.x: #} seems to have
     no effect. The same seems to be true for {*Session Manager.x: #}. Any
     ideas?

  2) Is there a way to have the VAX Notes main window start as an Icon but
     have all other Notes related windows start as windows?

  3) Can I set it so my Icon Box will only scroll vertically?

  4) Does any one know what would cause boxes to be draw around text such
     as System Messages in my Session Manager and all the text on the
     customize screens. Bellow is my DECW$XDEFAULTS.DAT file.

  One comment about something that confuses me, when I set my Icon Box to be
  of width 1024 how come the background shows through on both sides. Are the
  units in the xdefaults file pixels or does 1036(some units) = 1024 pixels??

  Thanks,
  -Bruce

When the * was changed to a period and WINDOW was changed to SHELL the read

    There is a file named DECW$CLOCK.DAT in SYS$LIBRARY. There are resource

    suggest putting your modified copy in SYS$COMMON:[DECW$DEFAULTS.USER]

    Well, I don't know if this is a bug or not, but I've found that not
    everything looks in DECW$USER_DEFAULTS for the .DAT resource files.
    DECW$CLOCK is one of the applications that will not find a modified
    file there. In looking around the system, I stumbled onto the
    SYS$COMMON:[DECW$DEFAULTS.USER] directory that is created by the
    installation. I tried putting the modified file there, and success!
    it was found. XPOSTIT is another application that will only find its
    .DAT file there. I haven't really tried anything else. Since I knew
    that CLOCK would behave this way, and since we shouldn't modify system
    default files, I suggested placing the new file in the SYS$COMMON
    directory.

    Strange. I double checked before I wrote the reply. I copied my clock

    got absolutely none of the changes that I made. I retried the XPOSTIT
    .dat file and the same thing still happens. I did look at the DECW
    logicals after writing the other reply, and the .dat files that I can
    find are all in directories that are defined in the DECW$SYSTEM_DEFAULTS
    logical search list.

You know, it's funny...I do pretty much what .55 does and it mostly works.
However, it does seem to make SOME windows sticky. I suspect it may be
windows which are not setting their sticky characteristics via the resource
manager. In other words, I think the WM's default-for-windows-that-don't-say

	In DECwindows V2 the icon titles can overlap each other in the

	I like DECW V2 alot - this is my only complaint/suggestion so far.
	DECW V1 may have been to strict as to where icons could be placed

It is even better in Motif...because you can enable or disable the icon box..
if you like floating icons.

Also, the icon box can be iconified! So you can save screen real-estate,

    What I want to do is line up the icons for DECterm 1,2, and 3 to be

    to swap visible windows and that's real easy to do with piled icons.

    But with V2 the box really looks GROSS. (Sorry, Dave) There oughta
    be some easy way of lining up icons for DECterm 1, 2, and 3, but I

    You can change the color of the slider of the scrollbar and the
    scrollbar itself but what is the resourcename for the arrows? Is it
    possible to change their colors, too?
