Also, are these resources documented anywhere? A pointer would
be great.

Well, it keeps them from consuming CPU because of blinking cursors.
MAIL still has to check periodically to see if new mail has come in.
I forget the resource that controls how often.

| Blinking cursors, of course, are only an "unnecessary" consumption of CPU if
you don't like blinking cursors. Similarly, the mail polling for new messages
is unnecessary if you don't want it to do that.
Personally, I rather like both...

181.14 | *Slider: lightGrey causes defaults to fail | DRIFT::WOOD | Laughter - the best medicine | Wed Mar 08 1989 12:24 | 20 |
| I added *Slider: lightGrey to my DECW$XDEFAULTS.DAT file per reply .1. Since
doing that I have had a problem with my saved defaults not being used.
For example, I change my pointer color, or session manager icon startup state,
or window background color, save the new values as the default, immediately
try and "use last saved settings" and everything seems to go back to system
default. Same thing happens when I log in - system defaults. If I remove the
*Slider: lightGrey line from my xdefaults file, everything works correctly
again.
Also, it may be coincidence, but while this problem is occuring, I have
intermittent problems with not being able to log back in after logging out.
When this occurs, the screen clears after quitting the current session, but the
window requesting username and password never re-appears. I end up rebooting,
but there must be a better way to fix this.
Any ideas?

Cardfiler will accept a filename as a parameter if you define cardfiler as a

no effect. The same seems to be true for {*Session Manager.x: #}. Any

2) Is there a way to have the VAX Notes main window start as an Icon but

3) Can I set it so my Icon Box will only scroll vertically?
4) Does any one know what would cause boxes to be draw around text such

One comment about something that confuses me, when I set my Icon Box to be
of width 1024 how come the background shows through on both sides. Are the
units in the xdefaults file pixels or does 1036(some units) = 1024 pixels??

The suggestions from .44 worked fine, except the READ_WINDOW*x and y
coordinates did not seem to have any effect on where the read window appeared.
When the * was changed to a period and WINDOW was changed to SHELL the read
window came up where specified. However the DECW$TERMINAL*x and y coordinates
did not work. When the notes read window data is commented out then the
DECW$TERMINAL*x and y coordinates take effect. I don't understand what is
going on here.

181.47 | DECW$CLOCK.DAT in SYS$LIBRARY | AGBEAR::HORNER | A.G.Bear, Low tech teddy bear | Wed Jul 19 1989 13:03 | 8 |
| There is a file named DECW$CLOCK.DAT in SYS$LIBRARY. There are resource
names in it along with comments telling you how to change them. I
suggest putting your modified copy in SYS$COMMON:[DECW$DEFAULTS.USER]
so as not to mess up the original file. DECwindows will use the file
from the user defaults directory instead of the one in SYS$LIBRARY.

+---------+------------+

Since installing DECW V2.0 E-FT1 the layout is like:

181.50 | Doesn't always seem to work that way | AGBEAR::HORNER | A.G.Bear, Low tech teddy bear | Thu Jul 20 1989 12:33 | 14 |
| Well, I don't know if this is a bug or not, but I've found that not
everything looks in DECW$USER_DEFAULTS for the .DAT resource files.
DECW$CLOCK is one of the applications that will not find a modified
file there. In looking around the system, I stumbled onto the
SYS$COMMON:[DECW$DEFAULTS.USER] directory that is created by the
installation. I tried putting the modified file there, and success!
it was found. XPOSTIT is another application that will only find its
.DAT file there. I haven't really tried anything else. Since I knew
that CLOCK would behave this way, and since we shouldn't modify system
default files, I suggested placing the new file in the SYS$COMMON
directory.

.dat file to my SYS$LOGIN (DECW$USER_DEFAULTS), restarted clock, and
got absolutely none of the changes that I made. I retried the XPOSTIT
.dat file and the same thing still happens. I did look at the DECW
logicals after writing the other reply, and the .dat files that I can
find are all in directories that are defined in the DECW$SYSTEM_DEFAULTS
logical search list.

In DECwindows V2 the icon titles can overlap each other in the
icon box; is there a resource to make the icons line up better
under one another? Something like a SNAP feature would be great.
I like DECW V2 alot - this is my only complaint/suggestion so far.
DECW V1 may have been to strict as to where icons could be placed
but it seems too laxed in V2.
Any help on a "snap-type" resource ?,

# Icon Box &%
K|T|Y|U|Bookreader DECterm 1

What I want to do is line up the icons for DECterm 1,2, and 3 to be
vertically aligned. Over on the left I've got other icons piled
on top of one another, and I like it that way. Frequently I need
to swap visible windows and that's real easy to do with piled icons.
But with V2 the box really looks GROSS. (Sorry, Dave) There oughta
be some easy way of lining up icons for DECterm 1, 2, and 3, but I
haven't yet found it.
Now, if we had hierarchical icon boxes, I could define one for the 3
DECterms and another for the other stuff, but that's probably a few
years yet...

I removed the comment mark and tried:
*Session Manager*MainWindow.font: -Adobe-Times-Medium-R-Normal--14-180-75-75-P-94-ISO8859-1
but it does not work. If I remove "MainWindow." then it works, but it also
affects the menu bar and dialog boxes and help. I just want to change the font
of the messages. Is this possible?
Question 2:
In general, how does one find out what the resource tree of an application looks
like? Do you need to get the .UIL and/or .C source, or it there a way to
examine a .EXE for this information?
:Karl.

Lacking the UIL source, the UID file would be the best place to
