167.0. "SIGHT like program" by GSPMO::WEST (I'm just visiting this planet.) Thu Feb 09 1989 11:01

I am looking for a program that does pretty much the same thing
as SIGHT did under UIS. We wish to upgrade our site from UIS to
DECWindows and this is about the only thing holding back one of
our workstations from transitioning to DECWindows.

If there is such a program, is there any hack that will convert
SIGHT files to this new format ??

RAGS (Raster Art Graphics System) will do everything SIGHT would do and more.
See the notesfile VAXUUM::DOC_GRAPHICS.

UIS metafiles cannot at this time be converted to any format that is revisible
with a DECWindows-based tool.

    Is one forth-coming?

167.3What about UTOX?OIWS20::BRYSONFri Feb 17 1989 14:018
Utox has an option that opens a UIS file. I believe, however, that the
metafile can only contain image information (that is, no lines, circles, text
or other UIS non-image objects). It's may not be all that you want, but it
may be a start.

It's almost soup. A UIS to DDIF converter library image should
be ready for CONVERT "real soon now". We really, actually, honestly
do have several people working on it.

Dunno. Have a meeting in the morning with the engineers who are
doing it to set a new schedule. The images that spring to mind
    all have glaciers :-)

Current schedule calls for something at the end of this month.
They are now producing DDIF files and busily working away getting
all the routines written for the various primitives.

The FT1 kit is being built and will be put onto the network tommorrow,
our system manager is in the process of setting up a new distribution
    node for VWS related kits.

I have a feeling that the end result of this isn't going to make
everyone warm & fuzzy. There are minor little problems in the fact
that everyone has DDIF supported in slightly different ways, everything
from using Gutenbergs and not BMU's to ignoring the pattern mask on
lines (the mask that allows disjoint lines in one aggregate) to the
fact that color is only half supported by many DECwindows apps. The
DDIF viewer has a tendency to reject files that can be converted and
printed or read into DECwrite, and DECwrite, the viewer and the PS
converter all do things slightly different. You'll also lose "little"
things, like the writing mode (hey, I'm not getting into *that*
    argument).

But we'll see... watch this space tommorrow or friday.

Ok kids, if you *really* want to convert those .UIS files to .DDIF,
then get the UISCNVX010.* savesets as listed below. It requires the
CONVERT utility to be installed (i.e. V5.1 w/DECwindows or later).

VWS V4.2 is now available for your testing. This version consists of:

    1) Problem resolutions. See the VMS Workstation Software Release Notes,
        Version 4.2 for details.

    2) UIS to DDIF Converter. This is a tool that allows you to convert .UIS
files created by HCUIS$WRITE_DISPLAY (this includes SIGHT files)
into any output format supported by the CDA Converter Library.

Documentation for this field test is available in LN03 format. See location
