159.0. "simple questions" by CUJO::WILLIAMSON (Mike Williamson DTN 553-3268) Wed Feb 08 1989 14:49

    Some questions that my a customer is asking me. Since I known
    nothing about Windows yet maybe some can help me out.

    - In a LAVC, if you load DEC Windows on one node, must it be loaded
    on all other nodes. Or can you run a LAVC with half VWS and half
    Windows nodes? (will also post this in the cluster notes file)

    - will there be a mechanism like RENDER that can generate device
    specific output from Windows files? (will also post in the DCL
    notes file)

    Thank You in advance for your help.

	You might wanna grab the DECwindows manuals and give them
	a glance but yes, you can run decwindows vaxstations and
	vws vaxstations in the same cluster quite happily.

    VWS & DECwindows -- yes. No problem and this is typical these days
    in engineering as people 'phase' into using DECwindows.

    There is no such thing as "Windows" files. There *are* DDIF files
    as well as Postscript. DDIF files can be CONVERTED into a number
    of formats including Postscript. Not all of the formats supported
    by RENDER are available (yet), most notably HPGL plotter format.

159.3VMS or DECwindows??CARTUN::MARGETSONMon Jul 17 1989 17:4114

    I know that DECW.par and VMS.par run either the DECwindows environment
    or the VMS environment. I also know that going into SYSGEN and using
    either of these 2 .par files will bring up the specified environment
    once the system is re-booted. My question is how are these files
    created and can a user go into SYSGEN to select the environment he/she
    wants? Also, is it possible to specify in a user's login which
    environment to use?

    Thanks,

    Melinda Margetson

    $ MC SYSGEN WRITE filename.ext saves the current sysgen values to a
    file.

    A Users LOGIN.COM cannot specify which environment to use: it is a boot
    time option (per workstation).

    Please consult an experienced System Manager and / or the DECwindows
    manuals. This is not totally straightforward.

    Absotively. "Playing" with this stuff is only okay if you are willing
    to break it.
