| How much room have you got now?
I'd delete the fonts and sys$system:decw$*.* sys$library:decw$*.*.
You may have to restore a missing file or two from the VMS kit
afterwards.

| I have 3k left now - could probably get to 5k if I had to.
Where are the fonts that I should delete? SYS$FONTS? Do I delete
all of the files in this directory?

| What I did in similar circumstances was to set window_system
to 0 (or remove @decw$startup from v5_systartup.com, I forget
which) and reboot. Then I logged in at the console and
installed DECW$DELETE. This freed up enough space to
install the server components on my RD53.

| De warned that DECWDELETE removes a RMS DDIF extensions file - can't
remember the exact name - that is part of the VMS kit.

157.6 | Then I shouldn't use DECWDELETE? | DELNI::TURBETT | DSS Product Manager | Thu Feb 09 1989 06:24 | 6 |
| Does this mean that I shouldn't use DECWDELETE? (you see, I'm very
novice at being a system manager).
Where can I find DECWDELETE (it's not on my workstation, and not
where LKG people normally keep their Cluster kits)

157.7 | Don't use DECWDELETE | IAGO::SCHOELLER | Who's on first? | Thu Feb 09 1989 09:15 | 13 |
| install VMS 5.1
$Delete sys$common:[sysfont...]*.*.*
$delete sys$system:decw$*.*;*,sys$library:decw$*.*;*
install new DECwindows
Don't use DECWDELETE. That kit came out with some of the early field tests.
It deletes things that were moved from the DECwindows kit into the VMS kit.
The above procedure does approximately what DECWDELETE did and it is safer.

157.8 | Some thoughts on more disk space | RWCVAX::COULSON | Roger Coulson DTN 223-6158 | Thu Feb 09 1989 10:12 | 29 |
| RE:.0
I have also installed DECwindows on a VS2000 with only an RD53. Here
are some thoughts.
- Eliminate the dump file or make it about 10 blocks long.
- Do not attempt to install the programming support of DECwindows.
- Eliminate old log files, accounting files, etc.
- Do an analyze/disk and see if you can recover from files marked for
delete but not deleted.
- Check for multiple copies in the system that have not gotten purged,
like multiple versions of DCLTABLES.EXE.
- When you install VMS do NOT expand the libraries. HELP will be
slower but it will fit!!!
- A backup and restore will defragment the disk and make pagefiles etc
contiguous as well as improve file performance.
... There must be more... anyone else with ideas?
