150.0. "AUTO-REPEAT Characters" by INBLUE::RODAS (Christian RODAS I.E.D. Valbonne) Wed Feb 08 1989 08:39

    Hi,

I have a problem using WPS-PLUS via DECterm, or VWSLAT, or SETHOST.
I obtain frequently a stream of 6-12 characters repeated, even If I type
in a character briefly. (I mean I don't leave my finger long enough on
the key to start Auto repeat)

This is true for any character or space, and particularly so ennoying
(it happens sometimes every two/three times per line I enter.) that I
    use a VT200 instead...

WPS-PLUS is using very frequently the Turn Auto Repeat ON/OFF escape
    sequence during an editing session

I am running VMS 5.1 SDC, on a VS2 GPX connected as a cluster
    satellite.

I had got this problem in the past with earlier version, it disappeared
with 5.0-D and came back again.

Any chance to solve it ?

    	Christian

Sounds like a DECterm bug (see the DECterm conference). It's also illegal
for WPS-Plus to be doing this in the first place. Have you QARed them both?

Workaround is to lock user features, in the General
customize menu. It's been discussed in a previous note.

And WPS-PLUS has been doing it forever....

RE 150.2, you cannot lock out the auto repeat option from WPS-PLUS
using the General options menu as it is toggling the auto-repeat
disregarding this setting. As in 150.3 WPS-PLUS has been doing this
since day 1 of its inception.

I believe this is a bug against DECterm as this is non-reproducible
    problem using a VT320.

150.5WPS-PLUS could fix it themselves, if they wanted toATLAST::BOUKNIGHTW. Jack BouknightWed Feb 08 1989 20:1715
Hey Mark, was wondering if you were still around ...

Using auto-repeat on/off to control repeating character flooding
... I ran into this problem long while back when I got OUTLINE running
on a VAXstation II. Seems the VWS terminal emulator couldn't/wouldn't
emulate the auto-repeat on/off feature either. Solution I adopted
was to buffer input and do stripping of repeated input characters
myself. Got rid of the auto-repeat stuff and it has worked fine
    since.

Interesting to see the "feature" propagating even across different
    implementations of terminal emulation ...

    1)	"Lock User Features" *should* cause the sequence to be ignored,
if it doesn't then it's a DECterm bug.

    2)	The bug in without doubt in DECterm. I doubt it's the same bug
that UIS is plagued by, in UIS the problem was from the driver
completely reseting all of the keyboard state when *any* attribute
was changed, on a GPX the resulting ack's from the LK201 overran
the input buffer and caused dropped characters and garbage. I
*thought* that DECwindows had put the main keyboard into UP/DOWN
mode and simulated autorepeat by a driver timer and sent 'clicks'
to the LK201. The UIS VT200 emulator eventually just no-oped the
escape sequence completely, it really is a useless sequence for
a terminal emulator in any case (it should be a workstation (all
    	windows) wide setting).

    3)	WPS+ uses the sequence *improperly* as defined by DEC STD-070
regardless of how many eons it's been doing it. The sequence
is a USER PREFERENCE FEATURE (and thus can be inhibited by the
Lock User Features) and as such it is ONLY to be sent at the request
of the user and NOT as flow control.

150.7Fix for WPS-PLUS Auto-RepeatINBLUE::BASSINNEThu Feb 09 1989 18:397
"Lock User Features" and setting "No Auto Repeat" enables the
WPS-PLUS editor to function properly with DECterm.

    Thanks for the tip.

    Set No Auto Repeat??

Where do set this? Customize the DECwindows term or from a
    DCL command??

Re: .8

You can turn off Auto Repeat in the Customize Keyboard dialog box in DECterm.
I'm not sure if that's necessary, though, it may be enough just to Lock
User Features in Customize General.

Yep! Thanks Bob that took care of that problem on both my VS3100
and my friend's MV II GPX, now if we can only fix 1179.0!!

    Thanks again!
