134.0. "executing DECterm fm Com procedure" by CSOA1::CONTINI () Mon Feb 06 1989 16:43

    Could anyone please tell me how we would execute a decterm window
    from a command procedure? What we want to accomplish is the following:

    Under the applications menu in DECwindows, we would like to invoke
    Allin1 which would be running on a remote system on the network
    (Enet). Since Allin1 is not yet a DECwindows application, this
    would have to be brought up through a terminal emulator. We don't
    want to have to bring up a DECTerm window, set host, etc. etc.

    What we would like to do is write a little script file to open up
    a decterm window, set host, etc, etc.

    We have no problem customizing the menus/verbs portion
    but have not figured out how to execute the decterm window this
    way.

    You can help yourself by reading notes in this conference.

    Sounds like you should look for info on the CHILD utility.

    Conference HANNAH::DECTERM has information on creating DECterms.
    Both remote and local. Or, as Andy (.-1) mentions, look around
    for references to CHILD.

FileView, when it detects that you are trying to write to SYS$OUTPUT,
automatically creates a terminal emulator for you and attaches you
process to that terminal emulator window.

So, you don't have to do anything. Just start Allin1 from your menu item
and it will pop up in a TE window.

134.5Remote invocation not so cleanDECWIN::KLEINTue Feb 07 1989 10:1915
If part of your question was how to invoke Allin1 remotely, there seem to be
two choices. You could run FileView remotely and run Allin1 on the same node
as FileView, or you could spawn Allin1 remotely (in which case you would
have to create your own terminal emulator with CHILD, as described in the
earlier replies).

Starting FileView remotely involves either submitting a remote batch job
which defines DECW$DISPLAY back to your workstation and then runs
SYS$SYSTEM:VUE$MASTER, or setting host and doing the same.

If all you're going to do is run Allin1 on the remote machine, then the
CHILD approach seems better.

Re: .3

I added the DECTERM conference mentioned in .3 but I get "no such file" when I
try to open it.
Wrong node? Wrong filename?

Try HANNAH::DECW$DISK:[PUBLIC]DECTERM.

Also, Note 2.* is the place to look for related conferences.
