77.0. "??'s on instal decw" by CTC002::MORIN () Tue Jan 31 1989 11:00

           <BECAUSE THE DECWINDOW_OLD CONFERENCE IS NOT AVAILABLE>

     Could someone tell me if I have the right scenario for installing
     DECwindows.  I'm currently running VMS5.0-2T0.

     1) Install DECWBL1100

     2) Install VMSU2_DW1_050

     Decwindows was never installed on this LAVc before.

     Thank you in advance

     Diane

I forget how many VMS updates you need to go from VMS5.0-2T0, but
you definitely only have to install one decwindows kit and it's NOT
DECWBL1100! Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think all you
need is:

VMSKIT::SYS$KITS:[VMS051.KIT]VMS051
VMSKIT::SYS$KITS:[VMS051.KIT]DECW051

And that's it! You can go straight from VMS5.0-2T0
to VMS5.1-SDC. So says Note 5.2 in this conference:

"You must have VMS 5.0-2 in order to install the VMS part of the kit, and you
must install the VMS part to install the DECW part. Upgrades from V5.0 to
V5.0-1 and from V5.0-1 to V5.0-2 are found in the same location but with
VMS051 changed to VMS0501 and VMS0502."

    Thank you for the information. The reason I said decwbl1100 was
    because I planned to go to vms5.0-2d1 so I'ld be the same as the
    main cluster here in CTC. But I guess I'll go ahead of them.

    Thanks again

77.3Keep network up? & DECWDELETE?ZEKE::KOZIKOWSKIHugs for HealthTue Jan 31 1989 15:2919
    A few more questions on installing DW

    1) After upgrading to VMS5.1, and getting ready to upgrade DW,
    	the installation manual says to shutdown the network.
    	I'm running a VAXstation II with an RD53, so I need the
    	network to upgrade from a remote node. Am I running the
    	risk of a failed upgrade by NOT shuting down the network?

    2) I haven't seen anything in here about DECWDELETE. I'm
    	currently running some previous version of DECwindows, and
   	would like to be sure that there'll be some room on my
    	RD53 for user files. (Yes, and RD54 is on order).
    	What is the correct procedure for upgrading when using
    	DECWDELETE? Where Can I get it? (I don't see it in the
    	KIT locations for VMS5.1.

    Thanks in advance.

I'd ignore it...I've been doing network kits since FT1 and have
never had a problem.

To my knowledge, there is no *official* DECWDELETE for DECwindows
SDC. I cleared up space on my system disk by doing the following:

$ del sys$sysdevice:[*...]decw$*.*;*
$ del sys$syscommon:[decw$*...]*.*;*

But be careful you haven't previously created custom files that
begin with decw$, or else say goodbye to 'em.

77.5It's around here someplace... TEACH::ARTThink the UNTHINKABLEWed Feb 15 1989 13:386
	The directory VMSKITS::SYS$KITS:[VMS051] doesn't seem to be there;
	is this just a temporary problem, or has all this stuff moved to
	another place ?

I've heard rumors that it has died (I think Monty reported this in another
note in this conference).

I have no more info.

77.7Hopefully, that wasn't Digital's only copy...TEACH::ARTThink the UNTHINKABLEThu Feb 16 1989 14:1711
	Okay, it's dead. Could someone who has some more information
	drop in a note specifying the location of the installation kits
	and the doc's. We're trying to get DECwindows online at the
	training center, and this is a major monkey wrench. I'd appreciate
	any assistance.

    Yes, it's back with the savesets for the software, but what happened
    to the documentation directories?
