74.0. "Some error messages" by LDP::GABRIEL (CMP/ISV DECwindows Tech Support) Tue Jan 31 1989 10:04

    I know I saw the answers to these questions in the previous
    life of BULOVA::DECWINDOWS, but here I go again. I have a
    coupla error messages I see when running some applications.
    The first two are not fatal, just warnings that I hope will
    be cleared up in post Field Test software. The two messages
    I see a lot are:

    	Can't set help modifier   and
    	Window manager is confused.

    What causes these messages ?? I am currently running FT2.1 of
    DECwindows. Will they go away in the SDC version ??

    The next circumstance is even stranger. Again running FT2.1 of
    DECwindows and VMS 5.1...It occurs in the DECterm. I go to
    customize option and all of a sudden everything just hangs and
    all the DECwindows process are in event flag wait state. I can't
    do anything at all. I have to halt the machine. I checked in
    the server error log file and see the error message # 2DB821C.

    	$ set message sys$message:decw$xlibmsg.exe
    	$ write sys$output f$message(%x2DB821C)

        %XLIB-F-IOERROR, xlib io error

    Has anyone else seen this ?? Are there cures for this ???
    I saw a similar note in the DECterm notesfile with the same
    error message but nobody there had any explanations either.

    Thanks for any help/suggestions.

I believe the "Can't set help modifier" message means that you probably have
shift lock turned on.
