61.0. "Version for the PVAX?" by DCC::HAGARTY (Essen, Trinken und Shaggen...) Mon Jan 30 1989 05:09

Ahhh Gi'day...

    Well the old DECwindows got clobbered, so...

    there was a note in it, 1704.1 to be exact, that explained something
    about why to use FT3 (?) for the PVAX!! Has anybody got it?

    I'm about to build (actually I've already gone and done it) systems for
    one of the largest trade shows in Europe, and I'd like to find out if
    there's something wrong with it...

			   I thought I'd used FT3U

I thought you needed FT3U before you could install DECwindows V1-SDC.
Prior to that, FT2.1 was all you could use.

BTW, when I say FT3U, that's TB1, right?

    BTW - where is it? I seem to remember VMSKIT::PVAX$PUBLIC:, but
    that hasn't worked all day. Even better - anyone have a copy on
    the left coast somewhere??

    thanks as usual

Ahhh Gi'day...

    This "hint" from a collegue said that you should ONLY use FT3, but I
    don't know whether he knows something I don't or whether he's right off
    the track...

    I've put SDC DECW on FT3U (TB1) and it seems to work fine (better than
    SDC on FT3), I just wanted to make sure it doesn't break when the thrid
    parties start installing on it :-)

Ahhh Gi'day...

    There *ARE* some problems on this!

    I installed WRITER Bl5 and the examples files can't be read! It seems
    the old semantics problem is here again! I CANNOT do a set file
    /nosemantics (it's a noop) and I have got an ACL on file (just like we
    did many versions ago)...

61.5VIA::FINNEGANA single fact will often spoil an interesting argumentThu Feb 02 1989 09:386
    This is a real shot in the dark but if you want a file to recognised
    by writer then you should be doing a $ SET FILE/SEMANTICS=DDIF not
    /NOSEMANTICS

61.6Been there...DCC::HAGARTYEssen, Trinken und Shaggen...Thu Feb 02 1989 12:124
Ahhh Gi'day...

    Sorry, set file/sem=ddif is also a no-op...

61.7CLO::COBURNWhen will THEN be NOW? ...SOON!Fri Feb 03 1989 08:2612
    You say that there is an ACL on the .DDIF file that Writer is trying to
    read?

    Is the ACL identical to one on a .DDIF file that works (create a new
    document to check its ACL).

    I had this problem on the demo equipment we used here. There were no
    ACLs on some of the demo documents. I attempted to add the ACL using
    EDIT/ACL (which worked fine) but Writer was very picky - the ACL had to
    be exact.

61.8JAMMER::JACKMarty JackFri Feb 03 1989 10:083
    There is a SET FILE/SEMANTICS=DDIF command that will set the correct
    file tag (which is implemented as an ACE).

61.9No Mouse Action on 3100CIMNET::BELCULFINEWed Feb 08 1989 09:308
    Has anyone experienced problems with the mouse on a 3100, ft3u and
    decwindows sdc?. The decwindows install went fine, and the startup
    is fine, screen display at login is fine, but no mouse action. Tried
    swapping in another mouse etc still no go.

    ideas please!
    Thanks/David

I see nothing wrong and I am running the same versions. Did you happen to
crow bar the thermistor, or worse, blow out a driver? You should not
see a mouse problem caused by software. This was fixed by FT2 time of
DECwindows.

    Know problem. set.exe is broken. People in PVAX land have a fix
    that is being tested.
