DECwindows installation on big clusters Hi, we have a mixed NICI cluster with 4 CI members and currently 20 NI cluster member workstations. As we have several system disks, you have to install DECwindows on each of the disk. We use our cluster for CAD engineering, and various CAD-tools we use allow the cluster-wide installation on a particular disk on the cluster disk farm, as some other VMS layered products do as well. We don't use DECwindows currently because most of tha applications haven't converted to the DECwindows programming calls, but we use it experimentally. Anyway, for large clusters, it would be good if the none-device specific code (programming libraries, common sharable fonts etc.) could be stored cluster wide on some cluster disk (specified at installation time). This would reduce the installation time and disk usage a lot. Do you anticipate to make DECwindows a "cluster tool"? Why didn't you do it in the first place? Herbert Maehner, SASE, MSESU

>Do you anticipate to make DECwindows a "cluster tool"? Why didn't you do it >in the first place? I think I know what you mean. However, if I do then you have misunderstood DECwindows. Think of DECwindows as part of the OS. There are some optional parts but it is still essentially part of VMS or ULTRIX not a layered product. Dick
52.2 | sure, part of the OS, but think distributed... | DEADWD::MAEHNER | Fri Feb 03 1989 10:16 | 12
...but even if it's part of the OS, it doesn't mean that ALL DECwindows files have to reside on the system disk. Don't restrict the OS to the system disk, think distributed. I did a modified DECwindows installation into a cluster-wide central directory and got most of the functions working. At least the programming libraries should be on a central place... Thanks for your understanding, anyway.... Herbert

As part of the SBT program, the VMS/BSPE group will be looking at ways to generalize access to software to allow a much more distributed mode of operation. The benefits of this will apply within VAXclusters and to DECwindows inherently. In general, we would like read-only access to certain types of data on the net to be simple, transparent, and where performance allows, effective. This isn't very high-tech, more a matter of making the system/cluster/network management easy, and removing some unnecessary locality restrictions. - greg |
