18.0. "Impact of DECwindows bundling in VMS 5.2" by PULMAN::MACK (Embrace No Contradictions) Thu Jan 26 1989 13:11

I need a clarification on a topic from the old conference. Somebody
may already have answered me there, but alas, I haven't been in the
conference over the past several days.

Will VMS 5.2 require system managers to have enough disk space on their
systems to fit DECwindows, or will DECwindows remain optional?

Will any component of DECwindows be optional? (like the programmer
stuff?)

Approximately how much additional disk space should system managers
expect to need?

What is the smallest disk that VMS will still fit on? RD52? RD53? RD54?

I'm trying to gauge the impact on our group's (internal) customers...

ALL of DECWINDOWS gets installed with the current VMS052 kit. A
DECW$TAILOR.EXE is provided to remove the bits you don't want
afterwards.

> Approximately how much additional disk space should system managers

Lots. My RD54 had 35000 blocks free after installation. This went up to
110000 after running DECW$TAILOR to remove 100 DPI and Programming
support.

> What is the smallest disk that VMS will still fit on? RD52? RD53? RD54?

RD52's are no longer supported as system disks. I forgt the size of an
RD53 but I doubt VMS 5.2 will fit.

I'm avoiding X5.2 and DECwindows on my VS2000, 6MB, with only
a single RD54. I'm still running VWS.

Isn't this a sad state of things? Today, I can say "I only have
a single RD54." and get sympathy. If I would say (let's say just a year
ago), that I _only_ have a RD54, most people would come to my office
and slap the crap out of me for being arrogant.

Life goes on. RD52's and RD53's are boat anchors.

Does the fact that VMS 5.2 won't fit on an RD53 mean that those of us
with microVAX I's who want the latest VMS but not DECwindows, are out
of luck?

I think so, I seem to remember reading somewhere that uVAX I's are
no longer supported with VMS V5. I don't know how true that is,
but if it is I am afraid that's your answer.

True enough, in big, bold letters, the release notes say "this release
does not support microvax I's" - amongst other processors.

18.7I have 5.1 + DW on an RD53DECWIN::FISHERBurns Fisher 381-1466, ZKO3-4/W23Fri Jan 27 1989 15:3523
If I remember right, the installation procedure is clever and does not give you
all the stuff if you don't have room for it. Like for example, I think it
does not give you all the programming support if you are short on space (and that
is a lot of saved blocks!).

I have the following on an RD53 with 20-30K blocks left over:

VMS 5.1 (not tailored)
DECWINDOWS library
DECwindows server
DECwindows programming support (2 languages only)
DECwindows 75DPI fonts (excluding 100DPI fonts)
LSE
NOTES
VAX C
Other unmentionable stuff
Reasonable page file (can't remember 10-20K?)

I do have an RD52 on the system also on which I was planning to put the page
file, but since I had enough room on the system disk, I did not bother.

I also have V5.1 and DECwindows installed on a RD53 and it all fit
ok. However, I had to copy a bunch of stuff off to get enough room
to complete the installation(needs about 50,000 free blocks). I
have LSE, Rdb V3, VaxC,...have not run tailor, and still have 10,000
free blocks. 6,000 page file.

18.9UNSUPPORTED <> BROKEN (in this case, at least)21532::CURTISDick "Aristotle" CurtisWed May 17 1989 20:2111
.4, .5:

Please bear in mind that "unsupported" does not always mean "known to
not work". I can tell you that VMS 5.0 will run on a VAX I; don't
know about 5.1, though, and I heard a rumor that the CPU-related .EXE
files that were included in 5.0 won't be in the 5.2 kits.

Send me mail if you want more info.

18.10VMS v5.2, DECwindows installed later.MLNCSC::BELLENCHIAR. Bellenchia - Product Support ItalyThu Oct 26 1989 13:4017
Hi,
the "VMS v52 Upgrade and Installation Procedures" manual reports
that the customer can optionally provide support for DECwindows.
Here a possible scene:

a customer receives his VAX 6310 (boot member) and a VS3100 (satellite)
and installs VMS v5.2 and VWS. ATTENTION: the customer doesn't require
DECwindows support.
After some time he would like to install DECwindows. As the DECwindows
distribution kit start with .C save set, VMSINSTAL fails.
How can the customer install DECwindows ?

Thanks for any hints.

Regards,
Roberto
