    Well, you asked for it, you got it.  The DECwindows conference has been
    reborn into a new file starting from scratch.  Hopefully, this will fix
    a lot of the problems that people have been reporting, including search
    time, holes in the index, etc.
    
    The bad news is that the event that triggered this was that the
    original file got destroyed.  The worse news is that when we moved
    BULOVA to a bigger machine and separated it from the file access
    machine (now VMSKIT), we ended up without a tape drive.  Thus the
    latest backup is fairly old.  We will restore the old file into
    a conference called DECWINDOWS_OLD and write lock it, but unfortunately
    activity from the last few weeks will be missing.  Sorry about that.
    
    In the meantime, here is what I view this conference as being all
    about:
    
    	1.  General questions about DECwindows, the program, the layered
    	    products, the applications, etc.
    
    	2.  General questions about how to do various things.
    
    What it is NOT:
    
    	1.  A bug-report system (see another nearby note for what we
    	    expect here)
    
    	2.  A repository for example programs (See Elktra::DW_EXAMAPLES)
    
    	3.  A forum for discussions of X11 in general (see RDVAX::X)
    
    	4.  A forum for unannounced product discussion.  (The moderators
    	    will deal with sensitive material fairly harshly...i.e. delete)
    
    
    There are probably other things that it is or is not that we will come
    up with from time to time and add to this topic.

	THe original incarnation of this conference is now available as BULOVA::DECWINDOWS_OLD. The backup from which this conference was done was on 30-NOV-88. Everything after this date was irretrievably lost. The system folks here have the appropriate hardware for backing up BULOVA on order. When I found out more, I will let you know. Burns

	Thanks to Andy Hagel, who extracted the old DECwindows notefile (with permission) for an experiment in context-based retrieval just before its demise, and Andy Leslie, who had tools and patience to put a conference back together from extracts, we now have a nearly complete version of the DECWINDOWS_OLD conference, with everything up to sometime in January. It has now replaced the partially-backed-up DECWINDOWS_OLD conference on BULOVA. Thanks again to Andy and Andy. Burns

	The latest DECWINDOWS conference corruptions have been fixed. With Peter (VANISH::) Bailey's help, I've replaced the old, corrupt conference with a new 'un. Unfortunately a side-effect of the rebuilding was to lose all keywords. Keyword creation isn't restricted on this conference, so go ahead and add RELEVANT MEANINGFUL Keywords if you wish. Another side-effect is that hidden notes are now empty. Ah well. Otherwise, all should now be okay. Thanks Peter! - Andy �� Leslie VMS CSSE Newbury

	More thanks due to Peter Bailey... From: VANISH::BAILEY "Eight or... ..." 4-NOV-1989 22:52:12.98 To: LESLIE::LESLIE I've copied all the keywords (and notes pointed to by same) from the old corrupt conf to the new one..... So the new word state should be the same now as before the rebuild

	I guess we have to add another "what it is not" to the list in 1.0. "It is not" a forum for requesting support for customer visits. This kind of thing should go through the product manager. The moderators have been wrestling with requests for help within the company (i.e. job solicitations). My personal feeling is that job solicitations are verboten. There is a job conference for that purpose. Now as to more short term requests which might fall under the All Hands on DEC banner in the US, we have been a bit more lenient, but only because we don't know what the correct channel is to recommend to you. 	The UNSEEN maps of many noters were disrupted because of a date problem with notes written on 10-Jan, they were datestamped 1991. I've now manually corrected this, all looks okay, let me know if you see problems. Andy
