From:	NAME: Harry Copperman

To: See Below

As FY '98 approaches, it is essential to ensure clear and consistent two-way
communication. To achieve this, I am pleased to announce the launch of the
DIGITAL Products Division "Countdown to FY '98 Bulletins" and the "FY '98
Electronic Suggestion Box". Status Bulletins detailing the reorganization
process will be issued weekly beginning today, June 2, 1997. The Electronic
Suggestion Box will provide you the opportunity to pose questions and/or make
comments in response to the information communicated. This will replace the
Notes file that has been in existence for some time.

To access these new communication tools via the web use URL:

I look forward to hearing from you.

Harry

This will replace the Notes file which has been ignored for some time.

Is more like it.

Do the web browsers accept a URL like NOTES://KACIE::SBU/57.1?
57.3BUSY::SLABAudiophiles do it 'til it hertz!Tue Jun 03 1997 12:1711

    	Sort of.

    	Use this syntax:

    	http://www-notes.lkg.dec.com/kacie/sbu/57.1

Replace node/conf/note with practically any other that you'd like
to view. Most conferences are available this way.

Why not set up an altavista forum.

The whole idea is to be able to SEE the comments others are making and
to see the response and be able to responde to either.

I can send mail anytime I want and probalby get a response but that does't
help everyone get the same perspective on a situation.

Both closed discussion (ie mail) and open discussion (ie notes, avforum)
have their place and both should be used.

I believe what people are saying is that we aleady have both types
of discussion venues already. The new forum is what this forum was, but
it takes people to believe in it to make it work

57.7How to Review Existing Postings using Web?RTL::DAHLTue Jun 03 1997 16:3514

Do you mean that the new web-based mechanism allows all people to see the
suggestions, comments, etc.? I just tried accessing the URL listed in the memo,
and all I could find on that page was a link to another page which seemed like
it would allow me to enter a comment, suggestion, etc. I could not see any way
to review existing message traffic.

Is there such a way? If so, can someone describe how to use it to see
previously-posted messages?

57.8The new forum is NOT what this forum was. HYDRA::CORRIGANIf u'll be my Dixie Chicken...Wed Jun 04 1997 09:318
I just used the new page to ask a question and enter a suggestion.
I see no way of viewing other suggestions/questions/comments made
by my fellow employees. You can check a box to request that Harry
    reply personally to your input.
Perhaps there will be follow on pages that contain suggestion box
entries and replys. But that's just a guess on my part.

What's really going on is that this notes file is one of the few uses that
the 'kacie' system still has. most of the users have moved to exchange and
they don't know how to manage the system anyway. I still do most of the
critical management and I haven't been in the group for 4 years.

So they want to get rid of the notes file.

So get rid of the notes file.

But dont' get rid of 2 way communciation. Create an Altavista forum
for this use. They used to have one on sbu.mro.dec.com but rather than
make it work they deleted it.

Or a newsgroup, like the new CLASSIFIED_ADS group that was just
    	created.

dec.sbu or something like that would work.

Or move this notesfile over to a Windows NT system running
the NT noteserver? AV Forum sucks.

57.13Success needs technology *and* motivation. Is anyone upstairs motivated?BBPBV1::WALLACEPC: tera$ fashion accessoryThu Jun 05 1997 13:4010
If you can't get Them Upstairs to play the game in Notes, I really
don't see what chance they'll have with AV Forum. And if indivdual
contributors just want to share their ideas and (potentially)
responses, Notes looks like a pretty decent way of doing it.

Does it need to be on KACIE? E.g. is there disk space on some other
notable node which isn't going away soon?

Well that was kind of my point. With a web page, every single person could
bitch and moan buf if those people don't communicate to each other in some
other way, each one may feel they are the only ones with a problem. "Tem
Upstairs" can easily ignore 10K mail messages (hell, if they go through
Exchange, then may not even see them) and pretend the troops are all happy.
