    This Saturday, October 5, I will be participating in a 10k walk called
    "Steps to Shelter" in Waltham, Mass.  This will benefit the Support
    Committee for Battered Women.  (More Information Provided Below.)

    From the pamphlet:
    
    "Battering by spouse or lover is the leading cause of injury among
    women.  Every 22 days in Massachusetts, a woman is murdered by her
    spouse or partner.
    
    Every step you take will help The Support Committee maintain its
    emergency shelter, 24-hour hotline, advocacy, and support group
    services which are provided to thousands of Massachusetts' battered
    women and their children each year.
    
    Domestic violence affects us all, whether it occurs in your own home,
    or that of your neighbor's, relative's, friend's or co-workers'.
    
    We at The Support Committee are working to end domestic violence and to
    provide peer-support, self-help programs for women who now live in fear
    of their batterers.  This non-profit organization has been working for
    10 years to maintain its services for battered women, services which
    can mean the difference between life and death.
    
    A month's rent for our emergency shelter costs $1600.  That does not
    include utilities such as:  electricity, heat, gas, water, etc...
