1023.0. "William F. Buckley strikes again!" by TLE::OCONNOR () Fri Sep 06 1991 12:27

I heard this piece on the news this morning. Please forgive the lack of
expertise on the legalese (sp?):

The induction of 6 women in the Yale University "Skull and Crossbones" club
did not take place yesterday as scheduled. A restraining order prevented
the induction. The restraining order was filed by William F. Buckley, Jr. and
several other Yale alumni (members of the infamous club, I presume).

In response to .2:

No reason was given in the little snippet of news I heard. Perhaps someone
else has heard more?

Skull and Crossbones is one of several "secret" societies for students
at Yale University. These societies are similar to the "Greek" system
of fraternities and sororities -- do you have those in the UK??

The Yale societies tended historically to be secret in that even the
identities of their members were supposedly unknown to the general
student population. The members were always seniors, and were anways
chosen during their junior year by the then-current members. This
part of the system hasn't changed.

The societies tended to be very close-knit, and in an all-male system
they developed some traditons, rites, and rules that did not, and do
not, sit well with mixed society; for example, one of the 'Bones
traditions was the sharing of explicitly detailed anecdotes of sexual
exploits. The idea that *women* could or should be privy to these
kinds of secret things is more than many unenlightened men can stand.
(Do they think women don't talk about sex? Maybe woman talk about sex
is different, but...)

In the past, being a member of one of these societies was deemed a great
honor, and in later life (business or public service) it was a real
asset in terms of its ability to open doors otherwise closed by the
old-boy networks. Today, society membership isn't so great; because
these all-male bastions are so far out of touch with society, some of
their past members actually feel humiliated at being identified as
having been part of that sexist scene. The numerical majority of the
societies are now nonsexist in their membership.

Yeh, Jeez, we've really gotta be careful about that "developing
traditions" stuff. It must be anti-murican or sumpin!!

So the militant femi-Nazi's strike again. Where will it all end?

    Lennard,
       Wow, William F. Buckley is a militant femi-Nazi?! I didn't
know that. What traditions is he developing?
1023.8VERGA::KALLASFri Sep 06 1991 15:296
gee, you know, now that you mention it, I THOUGHT maybe
William F. Buckley was a militant femi-Nazi. I mean, the short
hair, not much make-up, that whiny voice always complaining
about something, not to mention the snotty attitude. And now
the restraining order when he can't get the majority to agree
    with him!

Let's ignore William F. Buckley Dearest - he probably just hates
    	men.

Billy Buck often says things I agree with; wanting to dismantle this national
disgrace called the war on drugs, for instance. But this time I am shaking
my head; it seems so ludicrous (of course, I haven't heard the grounds for the
injunction as the news people had decided how they wanted me to think.) But
I can't for the life of me imagine a good enough reason...

What grounds can they have for a restraining order? Surely it's the
decision of the current members who they want to admit.
1023.13FMNIST::olsonDoug Olson, ISVG West, UCS1-4Mon Sep 09 1991 15:3210
Actually, Chelsea, the current order decides who to admit, but last spring
when they decided to tap in six women, the alums (who, in the form of a
corporation, own the building they meet in) locked them out. Then, the
alums (including George Bush) held a secret ballot and in fact, voted to
permit the induction of women. Sounds like a disgruntled minority of the
alumni including WFB are disputing that vote. I'm surprised a judge gave
them standing. Maybe we'll hear more about this case as based upon some
procedural error in the voting...

    So what's that well-known militant femi-Nazi, Billy F. Buckley,
been up to lately? I'm hard up for a laugh.

p.s. he is right about the war on drugs being moronic but
