| My mate's B'day has become less and less a big deal as the years go by.
He is only 2 weeks after Christmas and I always do my UTMOST to make it
special.
My b'day on the other hand is a VERY, VERY BIG DEAL to me!! I begin to
warn my SO and children at least 2 months in advance. I don't want
presents just a card and a cake with my name on it! That thrills me!
When I was growing up I NEVER had a cake with my name on it. My dad's
B'day was the day before mine and we ALWAYS celebrated our b'days
together on HIS day. Therefore the cake was always "Happy B'day Dad"
and that used to break my heart. Since I've married I strongly
requested that I have my desire. And so far, they've done pretty good.

I always make an extra special fuss of John on his B'day and Christmas.
Why? Because although he always got plenty of pressies on both
occassions from his parents there was never really any kind of
celebration.
His very best birthday (he says) was his 21st. It was not long after
we had moved in together and I wanted it to be different - and
different it was I spent 6 months planning it and he was the only
person that didn't know.
He got the usual clothes, aftershave and a cake and then THE envelope.
What was in the enevelope...... Two return to tickets to Paris for the
weekend. The look of surprise, delight and sheer "is it really true"
was great and it's one of the best weekends we have ever had.
Tracy W (we just had our 2nd wedding anniversary on Sunday :-) :-))
ps This was his first trip in a plane which made it doubly exciting.

1018.7 | She used to spoil me rotten too ! | JUMBLY::BATTERBEEJ | DILLIGAFF | Fri Sep 06 1991 07:18 | 15 |
| My ex-grill fiend (I mean girlfriend #-) ) has her birthday on the
12th of January. Her family were always broke from Xmas and she never
really had much in the way of presents as a kid. It was made worse by
the fact that all her brothers and sisters had their birthdays in the
summer and would get expensive presents.
I tried to rectify this by spending loads on her at Xmas, so she didn't
expect much for her birthday, and then spend even more on her for her
birthday, ie loads of roses, presents, a special cake, a nice day out
somewhere and basically spoil her rotten.
It was worth the nasty letters from the bank to make her day !!!

| To me, Garrick's birthday is _very_ important, but he doesn't like me
"making such a fuss" over him. To me it's important because I love
doing things for him, buying him things, etc... and a birthday is an
excuse to do so. He hardly lets me, unless there's such a legitimate
excuse!

Re: .7
Alison's birthday is on December 26th and she had the same sorts
of problems. Anyway, there are just too many other parties during
that time of year.
So we shifted her b'day by six months, to June 26th. She is never
quite sure how old she is anymore, but that is not necessarily a
bad thing.

My husband's birthday is January 30th. When we first started going out
together, I arranged a surprise get-together of most of his friends at
a pub near us for his 25th birthday. It was quite hard because as I
hadn't been seeing him long I'd only met them once or twice so had to
explain who I was when I phoned them all up!
We went for a meal first, and then to the pub. When we first got there
there were only two people there, Andy thought it was a co-incidence.
In fact, he still hadn't twigged when about 10 people had turned up!
When he did though it was worth it. About 20 of his friends came, and
he was so touched! He had never had a party for his birthday, and
apparently no-one had ever made any real fuss over it. He said it was
the nicest thing anyone had ever done for him! Perhaps that's why he
decided to marry me! :-)
